Student Booklet

After reading The Pain

and the Great One,
students chose one of
the main characters
and completed a
character study.

Character Analysis
Students record information about the character on the inside of
each flap. Then underneath the flap, record what this
information tells us about the character. This is helpful in getting
students to understand the difference between an inference and
evidence. We are writing our "evidence" on the inside of the flap
and our "inference" under the flap.

Traits and Evidence
Character Traits
On each triangle, students write one trait that describes the
character. Underneath the flap, students list text evidence to
support the trait. On the inside of the foldable, students can draw
a sketch of the character displaying one of those traits.

Tip:
Have students complete
their work before gluing
this foldable into a
notebook. It's easier to
spin it around and write
before gluing!

Printing Tip:
Recently, I've noticed that
some pages of PDF's print
blank. If this happens, try
selecting "Print Image Only"
instead of "Print Document
and Markups." If that
doesn't work, you might
need to update your Adobe
Reader!

Character Changes
First, students describe the character in the beginning of the
story and write this under the first flap. Next, describe the
character at the end of the story and write this under the "End"
flap. Last, use the middle to describe what caused these
changes.

Tip:
Use the guiding questions on the
fold-up image below to help
students plan their writing. As
always, you'll want to give students
guided practice before doing this
independently. Character changes
are tricky!
