Section A: Definitions and Concepts (10 marks)

1. Explain why 48 4/5 and 12 1/2 are equivalent fractions. Show how to verify it.
2. Give an example of two unlike fractions and explain why they are unlike.
3. A fraction is given as 77 1/29. Is it a unit fraction? Why or why not?
4. Write three proper fractions whose denominators are the same, and the
numerators are consecutive numbers.
5. Explain how you can tell whether a fraction is improper just by looking at it.
Give two examples.

Section B: Addition and Subtraction of Like Fractions (10 marks)

6. Add 173/9 and 7816/9 .

7. Subtract 816/17 + 173/17 – 131/17 + 246/17. Add 7216673/45 – 135617/45 to
64627424/45 – 63428/45.
8. Add 515+415\frac{5}{15} + \frac{4}{15} and reduce the result to the simplest
form.
9. Subtract 916−716\frac{9}{16} - \frac{7}{16}. What fraction of the whole is left?

Section C: Conversion of Fractions (10 marks)

Conversion of Mixed to Improper Fractions

11. Convert 5235 \frac{2}{3} to an improper fraction and explain each step.
12. Rewrite 3473 \frac{4}{7} as an improper fraction and add it to 97\frac{9}{7}.
Simplify the answer.

Conversion of Improper to Mixed Fractions

13. Convert 296\frac{29}{6} to a mixed fraction and explain why the whole number
is 4.
14. If 195\frac{19}{5} is written as a mixed fraction, what will the remainder be?
Write the fraction in its simplest form.
15. Why do improper fractions always result in a mixed fraction when converted?
Explain with 174\frac{17}{4} as an example.

Section D: Reducing Fractions to Lowest Form (5 marks)

16. Reduce 5664\frac{56}{64} to its simplest form by finding the greatest common
divisor (GCD). Show your work.
17. Simplify 3654\frac{36}{54} step by step. Can this fraction also be expressed as a
unit fraction? Why or why not?
18. Reduce 121242\frac{121}{242} to its simplest form. What pattern do you notice
in the numerator and denominator?
19. Explain why 1421\frac{14}{21} and 23\frac{2}{3} are equivalent fractions.
20. Simplify 75100\frac{75}{100} and express it as a percentage.

Section E: Comparison and Application (5 marks)

21. Which is greater: 710\frac{7}{10} or 35\frac{3}{5}? Show your working by

finding a common denominator.
22. If 49\frac{4}{9} of a pizza is eaten and 39\frac{3}{9} is left, how much of the pizza
was eaten? Express your answer as a fraction in simplest form.
23. Between 58\frac{5}{8} and 12\frac{1}{2}, which fraction is greater, and by how
much?
24. Which fraction is greater: 37\frac{3}{7} or 49\frac{4}{9}? Compare by cross-
multiplication.
25. If two unit fractions, 16\frac{1}{6} and 18\frac{1}{8}, are added, will the result
still be a unit fraction? Why or why not?

left? Is the remaining chocolate more or less than half?
27. Convert 3253 \frac{2}{5} to an improper fraction, subtract 125\frac{12}{5} from
it, and write the result as a proper fraction.
28. Reduce 4860\frac{48}{60} and 7290\frac{72}{90} to their simplest forms. Are
they equivalent? Prove your answer.
