ELEMENTS OF PAINTINGS
Applying pigment, color, or another media to a surface is called painting. Typically, a brush is
used, although other instruments like knives, sponges, or even fingers are occasionally used.
Prehistoric cave paintings from thousands of years ago make it one of the earliest forms of
artistic expression.
Painting can serve numerous functions, including storytelling, religious expression, decorating,
documentation, and personal or emotional expression. Realism, abstraction, impressionism,
and surrealism are just a few of the numerous painting styles and approaches that each have
their own distinct visual language and methodology.
Line
A line is a continuous mark made by a moving point, defining shape, direction, and movement in
a painting. It can suggest movement (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved). Each line
has its meaning: vertical line stress action, strength, dynamism; horizontal lines means
serenity, calmness, stability; diagonal line express tension, movement; curved lines appear
softness, flexibility, gentleness.
Color
Color refers to the visual perception of light reflected from a surface. It consists of hue (the type
of color), value (lightness or darkness), and intensity (brightness or dullness). Primary Colors:
Red, Blue, Yellow (cannot be created by mixing other colors). Secondary Colors: Green,
Orange, Purple (made by mixing primary colors). Warm Colors (red, orange, yellow) evoke
warmth and energy. Cool Colors (blue, green, purple) create a calm and soothing effect.
Texture
in art is the visual and tactile surface quality of a work, encompassing both the actual feel of the
materials and the illusion of texture created through artistic techniques. Texture refers to the
surface quality of an object how it looks or feels. texture Can be felt physically (rough, smooth,
bumpy).
Perspective
techniques artists use to create the illusion of three-dimensional space and depth on a two-
dimensional surface, making objects appear closer or farther away.
Shapes
It is a component of painting that aids in idea expression. They may be squares, rectangles,
circles, or ovals, and they aid in creating excitement, purposeful energy, direction, etc. both
independently and in interaction. It is a region with a distinct border formed by the differences in
color, value, or texture of the surrounding regions.
Symbols
Artists frequently include symbolic objects with a particular meaning or message into their
paintings. It is employed to convey concepts like life, death, hope, etc.
