Understanding Smog: Causes and Solutions

Smog is a harmful air pollutant that combines fog and smoke, significantly impacting human health, animals, and the environment. It is caused by factors such as weather patterns, sunlight, construction, and wildfires, leading to serious health issues like cancer and respiratory problems. To reduce smog, individuals can drive less, maintain vehicles, avoid burning trash, and plant trees to improve air quality.

Smog

Definition of Smog and its importance:

Smog is fog or haze intensified by smoke or other atmospheric pollutants. It

is a very serious air pollutant that combines fog and smoke. Smog affects
much more than human lives, it also has a large impact on the surrounding
physical environment. It is quite harmful and unhealthy to humans and
animals, and it can kill plants, it may irritate your eyes, throat and nose.

Causes of Smog:

Smog can be caused by several processes such as,

1. Weather patterns
o Smog caused by weather patterns is mostly because of exhaust
fumes. The weather conditions play a significant part in the
formation of smog. The lack of wind stops the air pollution from
spreading, whereas the high solar exposure drives the reactions.
2. Sunlight
o Photochemical smog is a mixture of pollutants that are formed when
nitrogen oxides and organic compounds react to sunlight, creating
brown haze above cities. It intends to occur more in summer because
we usually have the most amount of sunlight in summers.
3. Construction
o Smog caused by construction is usually diesel engines that power
the vehicles used in construction release pollutants, which go into
the air and create smog.
4. Wildfires
o Wildfires may also create smog. Organic compound burning emits
dangerous pollutants, burning also leads to a whole lot of smoke,
which may make smog.

Effects of Smog on Human health:

Smog can affect human health way more than you think, it can cause cancer,
eye irritation, breathing difficulties, sore throats, hoarseness, coughing, lung
inflammation, and even permanent lung damage. Smog may even cause
heart diseases, pneumonia, lung cancer,. It affects your brain in certain
ways, poor air quality both indoors and outdoors it impacts our brain
mentally as well. Higher levels of particulate matter has been associated
with exacerbations of migraine.

Ways to reduce Smog:

You can reduce smog by driving your car less, reduce gas resumption, keep
your car in good repair, turn off your engine, fuel your vehicle in early or late
hours, don't burn your trash, plant and care for trees, take care of cars, avoid
products that release high levels of VOCs, avoid gas-powered yard
equipment, like lawn mowers, ride a bike instead of a car, or walk whenever
possible. You can start planting plants, trees, flowers and more things to
reduce smog. Planting them will make the air fresher and safer to breathe, it
will reduce smog as well.
Be responsible as a good citizen:
So, smog is not healthy to humans, animals and plants. we can try to follow
the ways to reduce smog and make our city a better place to live.
