SOIL PHYSICS PROBLEM SET
1st SEMESTER 2024-2025
1. Solve the settling velocity of the particles if the diameter is 0.02mm and the temperature of the
suspension is 28 oC.
2. Solve the settling velocity of the particles if the diameter is 0.002mm and the temperature of the
suspension is 28 oC.
3. Using the velocity in #1, how long will it take for the particles (with d=0.02mm) to settle at a depth or
distance (S) of 20 cm?
4. Using the velocity in #2, how long will it take for the particles (with d=0.002mm) to settle at a depth
or distance (S) of 20 cm? Express your answer in seconds.
5. A soil scientist analyzed a soil sample. He measured that 1000 cm3 of soil has a wet mass of 1500g
and a dry mass of 1250 g. Additionally, he determined that the volume of the soil solids in the
sample is 475 cm3. Calculate the particle density and bulk density.
Formulas:
𝐌𝐬
a) Particle density: 𝝆𝒑 = 𝐕𝐬
𝐌𝐬
b) Bulk density: 𝝆𝒃 = 𝐕𝐭
6. A metal cylinder pushed into a loam soil is removed, and the soil it contains is dried in an oven. The
measured data are as follows:
cylinder height = 6 cm
cylinder inside diameter = 5 cm
oven-dried soil mass = 153 g
7. A soil is sampled by a core measuring 7.6 cm in diameter and 7.6 cm deep. The core weighs 300 g.
After oven drying at 105° C the core plus dry soil weighed 760 g.
a) Calculate the soil’s bulk density.
b) If the volume of the solids is 180 cm3, calculate the particle density.
8. A 200-cm3 soil weighed 320 g when moist. After oven drying, its mass was reduced by 50g.
a) Calculate the soil’s bulk density.
b) If the volume of the soil solids is 102 cm3, calculate the particle density.
9. A 115-cm3 soil weighed 180 g when moist. After oven drying, its mass was reduced to 150g.
a) Calculate the soil’s bulk density.
b) If the volume of the soil solids is 57 cm3, calculate the particle density.
10. If the bulk density of a soil is 1.12 g/cm3 and the its total volume is 113 cm3, what is the mass of the
soil solids?
