Magnetic Field Calculations Tutorial

The document contains a tutorial with three questions related to magnetic fields and inductance in different materials. It includes calculations for magnetic field density in a wooden ring, relative permeability and inductance in a mild steel ring with an air-gap, and mutual inductance between two windings on an iron ring. Each question is followed by a solution section, indicating a focus on practical applications of electromagnetic theory.

TUTORIAL 1

Q1: A wooden ring with a circular cross-section of 300 mm2 and a

mean diameter of 200 mm has a coil of 800 turns uniformly wound
around it. If the current through the coil is 2.0 Amps, calculate the
magnetic field density, B, produced by this current. (assume relative
permeability of wood =1)

• SOLUTION
Q2: A mild steel ring of 30 cm mean circumference has a cross-
sectional area of 6 cm2 and has a winding of 500 turns. The ring is cut
through at a point so as to provide an air-gap of 1 mm in the magnetic
circuit. It is found that a current of 4 A in the winding produces a flux
density of 1 Tesla in the air-gap.
• Find:
• (i) Relative permeability of the mild steel
• (ii) Inductance (that is self-inductance) of the winding
(Note: this question will be attempted after Batch 3 notes):
Q3:A coil of 800 turns is uniformly wound around an iron ring of
diameter 40 cm. The diameter of the iron is 2.0 cm. A second winding
with 0.5mm diameter is wound over the first one. If the mutual
inductance between the two windings is 0.28 H, calculate the number
of turns of the second winding. (Assume relative permeability of iron,
𝜇𝑟 = 800 and permeability of air is 4𝜋x10-7 )
