Abstract
Ambient Assisted Living is currently one of the important research and
development areas, where accessibility, usability and learning plays a major
role and where future interfaces are an important concern for applied
engineering. The general goal of ambient assisted living solutions is to apply
ambient intelligence technology to enable people with specific demands, e.g.
handicapped or elderly, to live in their preferred environment longer.
In last few years, the number of elderly people is more and more increasing.
Consequently, various efforts were made in order to improve the quality of
lifestyle for the elderly. An Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) works to create
better living conditions for older or disable people. AAL systems are able to
continuously monitor the health status of the elderly through data coming
from heterogeneous sensors. In this, we propose an AAL architecture for the
monitoring of elderly people, able to guarantee the collection of
heterogeneous sensor data.

Chapter 1. Introduction to project
1.1. Current scenario
Old age is a sensitive phase and as elderly people need proper supervision,
care and attention. Also, one of the main issue is the negligence towards
them, lack of awareness regarding the changing behavioral patterns in them
at home which leads to a disease.
1.2. Problems in existing system
If there's not always a person available for them at home to provide help and
care as needed, this risk factor is higher. So, monitoring may enable them to
live safely alone, or with minimal care, for longer into their elderly years. It
may also cut down on hospital admissions and emergency care.
1.3. Solution
As we all know that “prevention is better than cure “so, this is the main goal
of choosing this topic for project. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) approach is
the way to guarantee better life conditions for the aged and for people with

chronic diseases and in sickness recovery status by the development of
innovative technologies and services. AAL solutions can also provide more
safety for the elderly, offering emergency response mechanisms as well as by
allowing older adults to connect with their family and the medical staff.
Chapter 2. Literature Review
Recent advances in medicine allow people to live longer and healthier
compared to the previous generations. In fact, approximately 20% of the
world population will be age 60 or older by 2050. Aging brings many
challenges to older adults due to their cognitive decline, chronic age related
diseases, as well as limitations in physical activity, vision, and hearing. In the
US, about 80% of those over 65 are living with at least one chronic disease,
and an estimated 5.4 million senior citizens are suffering from Alzheimers
disease.
The increasing aging population will also result in many challenges for
society and the health care system:
• Increase in diseases: There will be an increase in agerelated diseases, such
as the Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease for which we currently have
no cure.
• Increase in health care costs: There will be rising health care costs. Currently
senior citizens use more than 40% of the US health care budget, while
accounting for only 13% of the US population. Therefore, the current model
of health care is going to become strained as the aging population increases in
the next decades.
• Shortage of caregivers: There will be a shortage of professionals trained to
work with the aging population, which means more family members have to
take the role of informal caregivers. Caring for dependent individuals at home
will result in many complications for the informal caregivers, such as higher
levels of emotional distress and physical health problems.
• Dependency: With an increase in age-related diseases, there will also be a
rise in individuals unable to live independently. As the population ages, it
becomes a question of how are we going to pay for the quality care for the
elderly and how are we going to deliver quality care to our aging population.

• Larger impact on society: Economist believe that as a society, we will be
unable to build, staff and pay for the older individuals to live in assisted living
or skilled nursing facilities. It is also estimated that annual loss to employers
of various working family care givers is about $33 billion ($2,100 per
employee) for absenteeism, workplace disruptions, and reduced work status.
Given the fact that 89% of the older adults prefer to stay in the comfort of
their own homes, and given the costs of nursing home care, it is imperative to
develop technologies that help older adults to age in place. In recent years,
researchers have developed a variety of assistive technologies based on a new
paradigm called “Ambient Intelligence” (AmI). Ambient intelligence is a new
paradigm in information technology aimed at empowering people’s
capabilities by the means of digital environments that are sensitive, adaptive,
and responsive to human needs. This vision of daily environments will enable
innovative human machine interactions characterized by pervasive,
unobtrusive and anticipatory communications. Assisted living technologies
based on ambient intelligence are called Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)
tools. AAL can be used for preventing, curing, and improving wellness and
health conditions of older adults. AAL tools such as medication management
tools and medication reminders allow the older adults to take control of their
heath conditions. AAL technologies can also provide more safety for the
elderly, using mobile emergency response systems, fall detection systems, and
video surveillance systems. Other ambient assisted living technologies
provides help with daily activities, based on monitoring activities of daily
living (ADL) and issuing reminders as well as helping with mobility and
automation. Finally such technologies can allow older adults to better connect
and communicate with their peers, as well as with their family and friends.
Chapter 3. Proposed Methodology
The data collected through the sensor from the band will be sent to the
database wirelessly and there will be a limit value set for the sensors. If the
value exceeds the limit, then the doctor and the family members will be
notified and accordingly doctor will consult the patient.
