Common Reading Questions
- The point of view character is the character whose most of his
feelings and thoughts were clearly expressed.
➔ NB: it would be better to focus on specific feeling or situation
that happened to him through out the whole story.
Ex : The main character (….) is the point of view character as his
feelings, when he saw the giant, were clearly expressed
through his own feelings and actions.
* He would use the pronoun ‘I’ and we will see the events
through his eyes.
NB : it’s better to say that a problem he faced wouldn’t be
clearly expressed and we will know nothing about his
feelings.
Or ➔ His feelings will be clearly expressed
through his actions and feelings
To express the feeling of (happiness – excitement – surprise –
anger …..)
Why did the writer use ellipses?
* Literary technique ➔ write an example from the lines
* Its type ➔ decide whether it’s (personification – simile –
metaphor - hyperbole – idiom ….)
* Its effect ➔ Mention what it shows and why did the
author use it
➔ to show that …..
Don’t write full explanation
just write the impact of using it.
Adverbial phrases ➔ more than one word and it is found in the middle or at the end of the sentence
(not a sentence)
Fronted adverbial ➔ at the beginning of the sentence
Fronted adverbials have to be followed by a comma.
Adverbs of time ➔ tell you when the verb is
done
▪ * All of a sudden, the lion appeared in front of them.
▪ Adverbs of place ➔ tell you where the verb is done
▪ * Behind the shed, there was a hidden bear waiting to attack.
▪ Adverbs of manner ➔ tell you how the verb is done
▪ * Luckily, they managed to escape from the dangerous forest.
▪ Adverbs of frequency ➔ tell you how often the verb is done
▪ * Twice a year, Sandra visited her wealthy uncle.
* Imagery ➔ it’s the use of figurative language to represent
objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to
our 5 physical senses.
Imagery = figurative language focus on 5 senses
* He used powerful vocabulary – simile – metaphor – ellipses -
hyperbole - short sentences - sentence fragment -
empty words(someone – some body)

The purpose of using the comma:
1- to separate items in a list (for listing)
➔ I need to buy eggs, milk, sugar and flour.
2- to separate two clauses
(before the coordinating conjunction)
➔ Mark loves cars, so he’s going to buy one.
3- to separate the subordinate clause
➔ While he was going to the market, he found a strange man.
4- to add extra information
➔ Jill, who goes to school with my
cousin, plays soccer.

The purpose of using the semi-colon:
1- to separate items in a list (for listing)
➔ I have lived in New York, NY; San Francisco, CA and Knoxville, TA.
2- to join two clauses
(instead of the comma and the conjunction)
➔ Mark loves cars; he’s going to buy one.
The purpose of using the colon:
1- to introduce a list
➔ A man needs three things to survive: air, water and food.
2- to add extra information or explanation to
the first clause
➔ I’ve got one more question: What are you doing here?
The purpose of using the apostrophe:
1- to show the omission of a letter or more
➔ They’re ➔ the omission of the letter ‘a’
2- to show possession
➔ Ben’s family (= the family that belongs to Ben)
One-line paragraphs are powerful tools that pull readers into
your story and compel them to turn the page.
One line paragraph is used to emphasize
and focus on an idea (….) and to arouse the
reader’s curiosity to continue reading to
know
more about that idea (….)
Things you MUST add to your story
* You should write the story till the problem
( a hint about the problem ) Without reaching the ending .
* Your story has to be a mix of events and dialogues
between the characters.
* Add a dialogue between the characters (not too many),
and write each speech on a separate line.
Tips for Revision
▪ 1- Make sure you wrote a title with capital letters for the first letter of each word.
▪ 2- Don’t leave empty lines between the speeches. Leave one empty line between the scenes
▪ 2- Make sure that you added :
▪ A description of the setting using figures of speech and the 5 senses
▪ All figurative language ( idioms – figures of speech – onomatopoeia… )
▪ complex and compound sentences with different conjunctions.
▪ Powerful vocabulary ( verbs, adjectives and adverbs )
▪ Different stage directions (movement – voice tone – body language – facial expression – sound
effects)
▪ Always show, don’t tell.
▪ Check your verb form to be written in the present tense correctly if you are describing what
happens on stage.
▪ Write ONLY ONE SETTING IN EACH SCENE.
▪ Change the scene if you want to change the place.
▪ Don’t add a scene in the car- bus – plane…
