Process Notes: Character: Poor Woman

Initial Understanding & Interpretation

From the outset, I understood my character as a representation of societal pressure, especially


regarding identity, ambition, and survival. She is a woman buried under capitalism, performance,
and loneliness—one who has slowly lost herself in the pursuit of "success." My goal was to portray
not just her external hardship but the deep internal fragmentation she experiences.

Development Through Rehearsals

During rehearsals, I explored how my character masks her true emotions. In the beginning of her
monologue, she is driven and polished, speaking about hard work and ambition. However, through
physicality and vocal tone, I layered her lines with exhaustion and self-doubt, hinting that the
motivation is forced and fragile.

As we worked physically, I realized her emotional arc mirrors a breakdown of the self—a theme
emphasized when she collapses into a mirrored interaction with Saessha. The mirrored gesture work
became central in building her duality: the professional exterior vs. the broken interior.

Key Scene Analysis: Scene 4

This was my character’s most emotionally charged scene. Her monologue about ambition being a
burden felt personal and powerful. I collaborated with Saessha to synchronize our delivery—
standing back-to-back symbolized isolation despite shared struggles. The movement where we fell,
forming each other's mirrors, underscored the universal experience of women hiding behind
facades.

The addition of Abhyudaya and Naisha pulling at Dia and Saessha (representing stress and addiction)
helped bring the abstract emotions to life. It turned psychological torment into something tangible
for the audience.

Use of Voice and Movement

I used a controlled, professional tone at the start of my character’s lines—then gradually let her
voice break and tremble, highlighting her unravelling. Physically, I kept my character upright, almost
statuesque, but added tension in the shoulders and jaw. Over time, she slumps, becomes shaky, and
finally collapses—marking her descent.

The final synchronization with the mirror and chorus elements allowed for a communal climax— that
my character is not alone in her experience. That made her story resonate as more than just
personal, but a shared cultural truth.

Themes Explored Through My Character

Capitalism and burnout: chases success at the cost of selfhood.

Isolation: Despite being surrounded by people (and social roles), my character is deeply alone.

Facade vs. Reality: A constant performance hides deep insecurity and despair.
Gender expectations: As a woman, she’s expected to maintain image, function, and ambition
perfectly.

Reflections & Challenges

One challenge was balancing my character’s hardworking and goal oriented persona with the
rawness of her inner breakdown. I wanted the transformation to feel natural, and theatrical.
Working with physical theatre techniques helped me embody the emotional shift more truthfully.

Another challenge was synchronizing with the chorus and other characters in overlapping scenes
(e.g., the mirror section). We rehearsed rhythm, spatial awareness, and emotional timing to ensure
clarity despite the abstract staging.
