Complex Engineering Problem
Transportation Engineering (CE-421)
Assigning Date: 25-11-2024
Background of Complex Engineering Problem:
In order to enhance the students in depth knowledge, complex engineering
problems are devised to provide the freedom to the students to devise their own
methodology to resolve a complex engineering problem. In this context students
of Transportation Engineering are assigned following:
Complex Engineering Problem:
Design horizontal and vertical alignment of an expressway in Murree using the
topographic map as shown in the figure. The roadway should connect point A on
the map to point B and the alignment approaching A and B should match the
tangents shown to the left of A and to the right of B. The bearing of tangent left
of A is N 65° 21” E and that of tangent to the right of B is N 75° 15” E. You may
select any design standard that you believe to be appropriate for this type of
roadway.
Relevant Material:
Introduction to Transportation Engineering by James H. Banks 2nd edition
(Chapter 4) can be used as a reference book.
Surveying and Levelling By N M Basik (Chapter 10) can be used as a
reference book
Students are also advised to visit any design office dealing with
geometric design of roads and discuss with the concerned person
Students have to submit the complex engineering problem solution
individually.
Report:
Report should contain all calculations, design in form of drawing showing
stationing bearing of tangents, deflection angles and radii of horizontal curves,
length of spiral transition curves etc. Also defend your design decisions, discuss
design standards, design objectives, major design decisions.
Evaluation:
Solutions of the Complex Engineering Problems will be evaluated using a
Standard Rubric being followed by Civil Engineering Department (attached).
Weightage:
This complex engineering assignment marks will be included in theory part of
Transportation Engineering with a weightage 5 marks (5%).
Submission Date: Last week of the end semester.
