G7 Mathematics Notes
Addition and Subtraction Of Negative Integers
Adding integers with the same signs
1. Add the numbers together
2. Keep the same sign in the sum
E.g : (+)+(+) = +
(-)+(-) = -
Adding integers with different signs
1. Determine which integer has the highest value in number (does not matter - or +)
2. Subtract the integer with the highest absolute value with the integer with the
lowest absolute value.
3. Keep the sign of the integer with the highest absolute value
Subtracting integers
You have to simplify when signs are next to each other first.
Same Sign : +
Different sign : -
2
If the number being subtracted is less than the number it is being subtracted by, the
answer will be positive. Otherwise, the answer will be negative.
So 3 - (-8) = 3 +8 = 11
Addition and Subtraction Of Negative Integers
First divide/Multiply just the numbers and to find the sign use
the triangle method.
Substitution
When you find out the value of a variable, you substitute the
variable with the value and complete the question.
Writing Algebraic Expressions
Expression : no answer/ just question
Equation : Answered question
Like terms : same variable parts. E.g : 3x and 9x
Constant term : term with no variable
Zero pair : a pair of terms that when added together equal to 0. E.g : 4 +(-4)
Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Remove the brackets, arrange by terms then do part by part. You can only add like terms
together. a and a square are not like terms.
