P #3 (Pipe flow of non-Newtonian fluid)
Consider a steady, laminar fluid flow through a pipe of radius, R= 0.5 m as shown below. Derive
the velocity and average velocity expression considering 1 D problem with Newtonian fluid. The
fluid enters the pipe at uniform velocity 0.1m/s. which develops into fully developed flow profile.
1. Compare the analytical and numerical solutions for 1 D problem with Newtonian fluid flow
through pipe.
2. Consider 2 D axisymmetric case and obtain the velocity profile and streamline for
Newtonian case.
3. Change the inlet velocity with fully developed velocity profile
𝑟2
𝑣(𝑟, 𝑧 = 0) = 2 ∗ (1 − 2 )
𝑅
with this velocity simulate the problem and plot the streamlines.
4. Now, change the viscosity with the following expression to consider flow of non-
Newtonian fluid
𝜇 − 𝜇∞
= [1 + 𝜆𝛾̇ 2 ](𝑛−1)/2
𝜇0 − 𝜇∞
where 𝜇0 = 0.492, 𝜇∞ = 0.05, 𝜆 = 0.1 and n = 0.5. Draw the plot of viscosity vs
shear rate. Plot viscosity vs shear rate. Also explain the difference with Newtonian
case.
