Military METAR Color Code Guide

Military aerodromes use color codes to convey information about visibility and cloud base conditions. Each color represents specific thresholds for cloud coverage and visibility, with black indicating the airbase is closed for reasons other than weather. The codes also specify airfield status and approach types, with different colors signifying IFR and VFR conditions.

Military METAR color codes

In addition to a normal TAF or METAR, military aerodromes may use a colour code,
which is a form of shorthand for their crews to reinforce the information in the main message.

The meaning of each colour is listed below. Minimum base of lowest cloud (SCT or more)

A code of black indicates the airbase is closed for reasons other than cloud or visibility .
