WICKED - WIZARD Side 1 of 2

ACT ONE, Scene 13: INSIDE THE WIZARD’S PALACE.

Elphaba and Glinda walk down a hallway. They round a corner-- and stop dead in their
tracks, seeing AN ENORMOUS HEAD, on a jeweled encrusted throne. THE HEAD
SPEAKS.

HEAD
START I -- am -- Oz!

The two girls clutch each other, terrified...

ELPHABA
Oh!

GLINDA
Oh, Elphie--

HEAD
I -- am -- Oz. The Great and Terrible. Who are you, and why do you seek me?

ELPHABA
Uh--

GLINDA
Say something, say something--

ELPHABA
I am-- Elphaba Thropp, your Terrible-ness. And this is—

All of a sudden, ANOTHER VOICE, an affable, human one, interrupts--

HEAD
Oh, is that you, Elphaba--? I didn’t realize—

AND WITH AN ODD, MECHANIZED SOUND, THE HEAD dissolves, and out from
behind the head steps THE WIZARD, smiling warmly--

WIZARD
I hope I didn’t startle you – it’s so hard to make out people’s faces when I’m back there.
(looks from one to the other)
So, let’s see-- which is which?
(points)
Elphaba?

Elphaba is speechless, too star-struck to move or say anything. He generously takes her
hand for her and shakes it.

WIZARD (CONT’D)
A pleasure, Elphaba. And you must be --
GLINDA
Glinda. The “ga” is silent.

The Wizard sees Elphaba staring at the enormous Head.

WIZARD
(Gesturing to it)
I know, it’s a bit much, isn’t it? But people expect this sort of
thing, and you have to give people what they want.

ELPHABA
(shyly)
I’m so happy to meet you.

WIZARD

ACT TWO, Scene 3. AT THE WIZARD’S PALACE—

WE TRANSITION. We see the Ball at the WIZARD’S PALACE—GUESTS dance…

GLINDA AND FIYERO, looking gorgeous and perfectly in love, dance by.

ELPHABA appears, and unseen, watches GLINDA and FIYERO… when suddenly …

WIZARD
START I knew you’d be back.

Elphaba turns, startled to find the Wizard

WIZARD
Just hear me out—I don’t want to harm you.

ELPHABA

Sides by Breakdown Services - Actors Access

(fiercely)
Well, you have. You have harmed me.

WIZARD
(heartfelt)
I know that. And I regret it.
(starts towards her)
Elphaba --

ELPHABA
Stay where you are!
(he freezes)
I’m setting those Monkeys free. And if you try to interfere, or call
your guards--

WIZARD
I’m not going to call anyone! Truth is—I’m glad to see you again.
It gets pretty lonely for me around here.
(beat, gently)
I know you must get lonely, too.

ELPHABA
You don’t know the first thing about me.

She turns away from him.

WIZARD
(Realizing it, as he says it)
Oh, but I do. I know the real reason you came back here. It’s why
everyone comes to see the Wizard. So I’ll grant their heart’s
desire.

ELPHABA
I don’t want anything from you!
II-3-89
11-09-06

WIZARD
Sure you do. You want to stop fighting, stop running… Elphaba,
you’ve been so strong through all of this. Aren’t you tired of being
the strong one? Wouldn’t you like someone to take care of you?
(she is completely nonplussed)
Please-- can’t we start again?

ELPHABA
Don’t you think I wish I could? I would give anything to turn back
the clocks! Go back to that time when I actually believed-- that you
were wonderful. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!
(beat)
No one believed in you more than I did.

WIZARD

Sides by Breakdown Services - Actors Access

Elphaba—try to understand: I never had a family of my own-- I
was always travelin’. So, I guess I just -- wanted to give the
citizens of Oz everything

ELPHABA
So you lied to them.

WIZARD
Only verbally. Besides, they were the lies they wanted to hear!
END I never asked for this…
(sings)
OR PLANNED IT IN ADVANCE
I WAS MERELY BLOWN HERE
BY THE WINDS OF CHANCE
I NEVER SAW MYSELF
AS A SOLOMON OR SOCRATES
I KNEW WHO I WAS:
ONE OF YOUR DIME A DOZEN
MEDIOCRITIES

THEN SUDDENLY I’M HERE

RESPECTED -- WORSHIPPED EVEN
JUST BECAUSE THE FOLKS IN OZ
NEEDED SOMEONE TO BELIEVE IN
DOES IT SURPRISE YOU
I GOT HOOKED, AND ALL TOO SOON?
WHAT CAN I SAY?
I GOT CARRIED AWAY
AND NOT JUST BY BALLOON …

WONDERFUL
THEY CALLED ME “WONDERFUL”
SO I SAID “WONDERFUL -- IF YOU INSIST
I WILL BE WONDERFUL --
AND THEY SAID “WONDERFUL”
BELIEVE ME, IT’S HARD TO RESIST
