A Review on the Role of Sutashekhara Rasa as a
Effective Ayurvedic Formulation for Amlapitta

INTRODUCTION
The Amlapitta is caused by use of virudha ahara (improper
diet habits), stress, oily and spicy food etc. Though it can be
prevented and controlled by conscious changes in diet,
habits and environment to some extent (Nidana
Parivarjana). But the treatment is still predominantly based
upon the use of medication from the conventional medical
perspective. H2 blockers antacid and proton pump inhibitors
etc. are the choice of drugs for the various diseases related
to reflux disorders and hyper acidity
DISCUSSION

To treat Amlapitta Acharyas has mentioned the

drugs, which are mainly having (katu, tikta,
Madhura rasa) kapha pittahara properties.
Whereas Sutashekhara Rasa is a unique
kharaliya Rasayana (medicine prepared in
mortar and pestle) having same properties
contains Parada, Gandhaka, Dhatura, Shankha
bhasma, Vatasnabha, Trikatu, Chaturjata,
Tankana and Tamra bhasma. It is mentioned in
Amlapitta Rogadhikara in Yoga Ratnakara (AFI
part 1).
Madhura rasa counteracts the tikshan guna of
vitiated pitta causing smoothening effect,
promotes strength and pacify vata pitta doshas
and also relieve daha (burning sensation).
In Amlapitta Mandagni leads to Ama formation.
Pippali is best medicine for Ama pachana. All the
drugs have deepana, pachana properties,which
improve the status of Agni. Sankha bhasma and
Tankana have alkalic property, which reduce
Amliyata (acidic nature) thus neutralize the
acidity and maintain acid base balance in
stomach.
CONCLUSION

Sutshekhar Rasa correcting the vitiated state of pitta

improves the whole digestion process and results in proper
functioning of Agni. Conceptually it is concluded that the
substances having properties like Ruksha, Laghu, Katu and
Ushna, has the effect to decrease the vitiated Dravya
roopa of pitta and maintain the proper functioning of Agni.
This study can prove a real breakthrough in the coming
times for the treatment of Amlapitta.
