[Music] Hello friends today we are here to discuss the
basics of report writing now at the very beginning what is a
report a report to Define it in precise terms is essentially a
formal document focused on a particular topic which
encompasses information discoveries or even outcomes
derived from an investigation or research process a report
is a more highly structured form of writing with precise
organization with Precision rather than an essay because
essay is sometimes very discursive and is designed so that
it
can be read quickly and accurately there are two types of
reports first a narative report now what is it this provides
descriptive information on an incident or event that has
already occurred the other is a tabular report this provides
more statistical information on a specific analysis of an
incident for example say an economic survey that comes
under what is called a tabular report we are concerned with
a relative report now a report it has got many subheadings
while writing a report you need to be very very careful as
each and
every subheading of a report conveys a message hence it is
difficult to structure when compared to essay writing what
1/44
is most important about report is its sequential manner of
presentation which is very crucial to capture the reader's
interest so the author or writer should have a clear
understanding of the report's structure and present the
details in a sequential step-by-step logical manner the
structure of a report it basically consists of first the title of
the topic second is a by line description third we have got
an
introduction followed by a detailed description of the event
and then a conclusion always remember a report is about a
past event so a report is written after the event has
occurred so we never using a present tense in a report the
language should be very accurate concise clear well
structured free of Jaron and of uniform tense preferably
past tense so it's either a simple past tense or or just a
present perfect the report begins with the title which
should be very expressive and easily understandable as it
signifies the entire Crocs of the report in a single line so for
example if it's about the last cricket match between India
and Australia then the report should be Australia win the
match India win the series so you in a one punching line
you were compressing many information so it should be
very clear in language and free of jargon next we have a by
line now this includes the name of the person writing the
report it might be a special correspondent it might be the
name of the journalist the introduction of a report
provides a short and Cru description of the enter report
then we have a detailed description this can be divided into
shorter paragraphs which provide detailed information on
the event that took place the conclusion should emerge
from the entire stepbystep progression of the report which
has been written or structured the whole Croc of the report
is covered shortly in conclusion the conclusive part can be
the final decision making of an event or an incident or it
might be an analysis statement let me provide an example
of a report
for example if you are preparing a report on the world
environment day which was celebrated on your campus the
2/44
first statement should be on 5th June 2023 the students of
such and such institution it might be the University of
North Bengal it might be the Center of iniversity studies
whatever it is celebrated Walt environment day from 8:00
a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the campus so at the very beginning
we are coming to the most important statement that is the
event which took place then we begin with a
description various activities were organized to celebrate
the Day you may begin with the honorable Vice Chancellor
addressing the students addressing the staff inaugurating
the events and he's very intermittent speech on the need to
protect the environment then how the students
participated in the program for example organization of
various talls various dramas skits through which they
manifested the need for environment preservation and
how they touched on the topic green India in the years to
come so first we
begin with the introduction then we come to the detailed
discussion of the events there description and how the
students they involved themselves in dances in Singing in
dramas that were themed on preserving the environment
at the end of the celebration the teachers distributed
saplings to encourage tree Plantation at an individual level
so we are coming to the events in a sequential manner
finally we may end with the celebration came to an end
with a vot of thanks by the registra and concluded with the
national anthem so what we have here is a precise report
on the events which took place on that particular day in a
very impersonal manner so the Hallmark of a good report
is its impersonal objective presentation well structured
sequential argument discussion of the events and then
coming to an end with an analysis or an analytical
statement thank you [Music]. make as many question as

[Music] he [Music] hello everyone my name is critica chetri
and the topic I'm going to be covering today is called CV
writing so we will be doing three things uh in the course of
this lecture what is CV or resume the second is what is the
function of writing a CV or a resume for freshers like
yourself and the third part is what are the different
different styles in which you can write a CV so I will be
starting with the first topic what do you mean by this word
CV or a resume so you'll often hear this term uh you know
people talking about building a CV or you know when you
go for any job interview people might ask you where is your
CV so what does this word CV mean the full form of CV is
curriculum V and uh you know the other word for CV is
resume now resume is a French word which means
summary summary of what it is a it is a document that
covers you know all your background details your
educational qualification the kind of experiences that
you've had your interests and so on so it's basically uh you
know a document
that tells the employer who you are what you have done so
far in life because when you go for any job interview it's not
possible that people will look at your testimonials or look at
your degrees one by one you know so this is like a
simplified form to let them know that this is who you are
this is what you've done this is your age this is your interest
uh these are your qualifications okay so uh to write a CV is
important for many reasons but the most important one is
to get a job so what should be the length of a CV it can
be of uh you know often it is one or two pages for freshers
you will not have that much of uh you know details you
don't have many things to add because you don't have that
much of work experience so you can stick to one or two
pages and what is the purpose of a CV the purposes to let
the employer know who you are so that before you go for
22/44
the interview uh they already have a brief idea okay so for
the employer the CV acts as a screening device okay so
screening device meaning they can select what other the
type of candidates uh are
suitable uh they want to choose they want to call for the
interview and who are the candidates to reject okay so
generally a CV is enclosed to the cover letter and it is
written before the letter okay so what is a cover letter cover
letter is something that you write when you are applying
for a job so you cannot randomly send your CV out
anywhere okay so remember this keep this in mind before
you send a CV to any organization you need to also attach a
cover letter telling them who you are and why you are
applying for the job
so and the CV is prepared keeping the prospective
employers needs in mind now that so this is the uh you
know purpose why should people write a CV why should
freshers you know build or create a CV for themselves now
how to write a CB so there is no fixed pattern on the
internet you will see many different formats and you might
get confused you know where to uh create a column where
to create a row and all of that so do not be confused
because roughly uh you know it can be divided into two
Styles
so this is just uh you know I've simplified it for you so that
you remember what are the things to add and the
patterning and the formatting is something that can
change over time that is according to your desire what is it
you know how is it that you want to format but the content
is very important so I'm going to be talking about what is
what should the content be like what are the things you
should add and delete so there is a traditional style and
there is a modern style now what is the traditional style so
the chronology of
the traditional style is as follows number one you have your
personal details that means your name your date of birth
and so on uh the second thing is your educational
qualification uh what have you studied so far what are the
23/44
degrees you have gathered the third thing is your work
experience okay what kind of experienes you've gathered
so far what are the uh different positions you've served in
what are the internships that you've done so far the fourth
is interest of the candidate okay what are the various
interests apart from your academics and your job what are
the extracurriculars that you've done uh the fifth thing is
references now references you cannot just include you
know your uncle your mama whoever it is it has to be
people who know you in a professional or in an academic
capacity but people who are not related to you by any
means okay now for educational qualification and work
experience the important thing to remember is they should
be in Reverse chronological order what does that mean
that means you start with the most recent degree or
experience that you've had okay so suppose MBA is the
most recent or Master's is the most recent so you begin
with master's degree then the next degree that follows will
be your ba your high school and so on so you do not begin
with high school and then go on to Masters okay so begin
with the latest degree always so this is the traditional very
simple approach uh towards creating a resume so I will also
be supplying uh an image of the traditional style for
you now we come to the modern style now following things
are important uh that uh that are absolutely crucial when
you are writing a resume in the modern latest style number
one is your basic data what is uh your basic data your name
your address your telephone number your mobile number
and your email ID because that is how correspondence will
work these days okay so mention your email ID if you don't
have it create one the next is career objective okay which
you didn't have in the traditional style now you also need
something called a career objective what is a career
objective career objective means your goals your interests
your skills that qualify you to meet that objective okay and
the objective should be specific and suited to the position
that means that uh suppose you are applying uh for the job
of a manager in a company so it should tell uh the
24/44
authorities or the ones who are hiring you what are the
managerial skills you have gathered so far okay so always
keep the career write the career objective
keep it the targeted job in mind okay so career objective is
one thing that you need to add even if you are a fresher
this is something you need to include and for that you need
to do some research on what is this job that you are
applying for okay have a look what are the duties what are
the details and what you can hope to learn from this so
depending on that you will create your career objective that
is a list of your goals then you come to the education part
so in the the education you include your
qualification from high school onwards so that's very
simple and you can divide this into columns however you
want to write uh it should include your degrees earned that
is the first you can say it's the First Column is your degrees
earned then the percentage of marks you've gained name
of the institution and the year in which you have obtained
the degree so four things very important now naming your
school or your college is not that important rather what you
have to uh mention is the board and the
university okay which board whether it is um your madic
board whether it is ICS cbsc which university if you've
studied in cigi college that falls under nbu so you have to
mention North Bengal University even in your ba okay so
the qualifications again they are listed in Reverse
chronological order that means starting with the most
recent with the latest now we come to experience now
experience includes work experience of course now this is
the part where freshers will lack behind because you don't
have you might not
have any experience to speak of but uh you can also add
things like part-time job the internships that you've done
which is why it is important to you know do all these
various unpaid internships also so that you can have
something to uh you know speak for yourself in the CV
unpaid internships uh paid internships and also voluntary
work a brief description of the job and the duties
25/44
performed so don't just list the experience as it is also
mention in one two lines uh what was required of you in
that job what are the things that you uh
you know completed during that job so it should again be
in Reverse chronological order skills then we come to skills
so skills should also be very you know it should it's things
like computer skills language skills writing skills you know
not things like oh you know how to cook and bake or dance
or whatever it is so very job specific so computer skills the
languages that you are proficient in in spoken and written
uh you know your writing and editing skills that matter to
the company okay now next we come to
the so the last part would be uh before your references the
personal details in the traditional style we began with the
personal details but now that comes in much later your
father's name date of birth gender nationality Hobbies
those kind of things whether you are a part of any
association clubs committees so they should reveal what
kind of a person you are your personality your attitude
whether you are someone who likes enjoys playing sports
you are an outgoing person you know they should reveal
something about who you are as a person and lastly we
come to the references they should be people who are not
related to you but who uh people who've known you in an
academic or a professional capacity so mention the need
name of the person the designation suppose it's your
professor at college so their name assistant or associate
professor institution nbu contact details okay because this
is important because sometimes the employer might want
to do a background check on you you know what kind of a
student you are how
well you uh fed in the University so for that it is important
to provide references of people who are not directly related
to you now resumés are also divided into two so we already
did the traditional and the uh modern but uh you know
there are also two other divisions you can make one is
chronological and functional now chronological is for
people who have just graduated from college and they
26/44
don't have much work experience like yourself and
functional is for people who have a lot of work experience
behind
them and they want to either change uh their field they
want to move to a higher position they want to change
careers okay so the only only difference here is that in
functional your work experience takes tenter stage so that
is what is highlighted and the education the personal
details they have very minor importance in a functional
resume the thing that is Major here is what are the various
kinds of jobs that you've done over the years so for a fresh
graduate out of college the important thing to remember if
you're writing a CV
is stick to the simple chronological style because you don't
have work experience to speak of so I have provided uh you
know uh an image of the chronological resume here starts
with name address phone number email ID the objective so
here the objective is to deploy the talent in promotion of
sales for company's benefit and Achieve an executive
position so this person wants to achieve a higher position
in this company so education begins with the latest MBA
then moves on to bcom senior secondary
matriculation then also you have additional qualifications
those are things that are not really degrees but uh things
like diplomas okay so diploma in marketing from ignu and
so on now work experience whatever internships you've
done give the date uh give the address of the company uh
personal details and then we end with extracurricular
achievements your interest your strengths what kind of a
speaker of uh you know English or Hindi or Bengali are you
whether you are proficient in these languages what kind
of people skills you have so in strength you can mention
things like good people skills but do not uh you know try to
stretch the truth okay so put only things in the CV that you
can substantiate that means for which you have the
testimonials ready okay so suppose you've said you have
scored this much 97% so it should show in your
testimonials because later people bound to check so do not
27/44
put any false uh information of facts in your CV which you
cannot support with documents and lastly we have the
references so it's
pretty much the same pattern as your modern resume so
uh that's all regarding CV writing if you have any questions
you can get back to me or you can post it in the comments

[Music]
welcome to my class and this class will
be dedicated to summary writing now we
all have certain uh tension while we we
we we have to uh write a summary because
how to shorten a big passage into a
concise uh part of of the main passage
that actually uh makes us anxious while
we write summary or we intend to write a
summary
but if we follow some basic steps of
summary it becomes a very easy job and
summary writing is a very important part
as far as the writing skill on any
particular language is concerned so uh
what exactly a summary writing is so to
write a summary of a passage or a poem
is to give its essence or the purp of
course nothing important or relevant is
to be omitted now the purpose of a
summary is to give the reader a
condensed and objective account of the
main ideas and the features of a text
usually a summary has between one and
three paragraphs or 100 to 300 words
depending on the length and the
complexity of the original essay or the
passage and the intended audience and
partners so what is summary writing then
so summary writing is a concise
reproduction of the original passage it
is in one's own language it should be
written in one's own language as far as
35/44
possible and it should be written in a
manner to make it read like the original
p passage now how to write a
summary we need to follow some basic
steps for writing a summary the original
passage is to be read carefully and
attentively reading may be continued
till its complete sense is clearly
understood so you have to read the
summary many times so that you will be
able to get the whole idea the basic
idea of the passage
then the main or important points facts
or ideas in the passage are to be noted
and marked you need to Mark with
underlining the main points the main
words okay then the proper sequence or
order of those points facts or ideas is
to be found out you to locate the main
ideas the main points the main facts so
in this respect effect you will be able
to find the central point or the basic
idea that is the very primary thing that
you need to do while writing a summary
thereafter the relation of other points
facts or ideas they are to be noted and
arranged when there is no central idea
or leading idea in a passage sometimes
you will find the passage where there is
no central idea or no leading idea so
there you need to maintain the simple
sequence of order of different points
facts or ideas so there where there is
no central idea or when there is no
leading point in a particular passage
you need to understand and you need to
find out the sequence or the line or the
serial of the main facts or points or
ideas unimportant or nonessential
matters are to be dropped and omitted
unnecessary details comparisons
figurative expressions and qualifying
36/44
words are not required so in a summary
sometimes if it is not required you can
omit or you can ignore the objectives
that has been used the passage that is
to be produced this reproduction of the
summary of a given passage that must be
what that must be concise clear and in a
proper SE quence of facts and ideas that
should be connected and most importantly
that should be written in one's own
words the language of the summary should
be clear pointed and correct so what are
the six requirements in writing summary
first reading and understanding two
selection three sequence 4 elimination
five reproduction and six Clarity and
correctness I repeat one reading and
understanding two selection three
sequence four elimination five
reproduction and six Clarity and
correctness so what are the basic steps
while writing a summary one first is the
introductory sentence and introductory
sentence for a summary often they do
what they they they often State the
author and the text's title next what
are the main points of the original text
this restates the main points that the
author has conveyed three supporting
arguments here you list the arguments
that support the author's thesis or the
main idea then four the final point here
you conclude the summary with the final
point from the
author now while writing a summary you
need to remember certain things just
like you have to follow the basic steps
that you need to know while writing a
summary there are often other peripheral
points that are also important just like
there is no hard and fast rule regarding
the length of the summary unless any
37/44
word limit has been mentioned in the
instruction if there is a word limit
given in the instruction then you need
to follow that otherwise there is no
hard and F rule actually the length of
the summary depends upon the mode of
writing and the nature of the passage
when short and simple sentences are used
the length of a summary may be a bit
more in case of complex sentences which
are much more uh loaded this complex
sentences when they are used this
summary becomes a bit shorter again
summary is much shorter in the case of
reflective passages but in the case of a
narrative or descriptive passage this is
a bit longer there are basically three
types of passages FR or verse which
which are generally given for
summarizing there are one narrative two
descriptive and three reflective T of
the passage is very important you should
make maintain the tense that has been
there in the main passage okay now I
will uh give you an example of a summary
writing that you can see here uh a
passage has been given and this passage
has
179 words now this passage actually
talks about the variety uh in life and
it says variety is the spice of life is
it not we all practically leave and
strive for having better food but food
remains INSP without the addition of
spices so uh life has been described has
been compared to a food and the
variations the varieties in life are
just like the spices of Life the absence
of variety makes life drab and
monotonous a man working six hours of
weeks will have his rest on Sunday so
it's about life the variety in life what
38/44
happens when there is no Variety in life
all these things has been described then
in the second paragraph uh the passage
say he used to change his residence
pretty often and about a poet's longing
for novelty life is many string
instruments and so and so has been
written about the SP of life now in this
main passage there are 179 words that
you can see here that is uh that has
been displayed now when we write a
summary of this passage we need to give
a title so what is the title the title
can be the need for change and variety
that can be a title of the summary the
need for Change and variety or variety
colon in the subtitle the spice of life
and how do we need to write about uh
write a summary of this passage we will
write variety is a spice of life comma
and without it comma life is dull and
monotonous we have used a compound
sentence here in the next L we will
write to develop civilized
new circumstances and a new environment
are necessary then there is a reference
of Tor here so we will use Tor because
this is a very important point in the
passage Tor was a poet who changed his
residence often showing his longing for
novelty life is a many stringed
instrument and we must give proper
attention to all the strings now this is
a summary of that big passage of 179
words and here we have written a summary
of only 54 words including the title so
while writing a summary you need to read
the passage many times so that you will
be able to grab the main idea the main
point and then you have to write a
concise version of that main passage in
your language in your own words as far
39/44
as applicable maintaining the tense of
the main passage one who can write a
somebody uh with uh with with expertise
is considered as a person who has a good
command over that particular language so
here I end my class thank
