What is Computer Ergonomics?
It is a field of study that attempts to reduce strain, fatigue and injuries by improving product designs
and workspace management.
Why is computer ergonomics important?
There are many potential health risk of working at a computer [Link] computer set up is
one element of office work or home working that should be considered when preventing an injury.
Following computer ergonomics can minimize your risk of so many computer injuries such as:
▪ Computer vision syndrome
This refers to a group of eye- vision related problems that results from prolonged computer use.
Symptoms include:
▪ Dry eyes
Just like any other digital devices ,computers can cause dry eyes as they affect the way we blink our
eyes.a person blinks up to 66% less frequently when using a [Link] you are blinking less tears
on your eyes have more time to evaporate resulting to red and dry eyes which further results to blur
visions.
▪ EYE STRAIN
Eye strain can occur when we force our eyes to focus in an unhealthy, natural [Link] example if
our monitor is placed in an awkward position ,the eyes are forced to stay in an unhealthy position
which causes the muscles to strain and makes the eyes to pain or ache.
▪ BLURRED VISION
It is commonly caused by looking at a screw that is too bright or sitting to close to monitor for long
time without break.
▪ HEAD ACHES
Headaches can occur due to poor lighting in your workspace improper computer brightness and
color.
▪ NECK AND BACK PAIN
People often adopt a certain position just to see their screens [Link] your body is being forced to
be in an unhealthy positions ,it causes muscular discomforts hence leading to neck and back pains.
▪ CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
This is a condition that causes pain, numbness tingling in the arms and [Link] is commonly
caused by the wrong mouse and keyboard placements when the wrist of the hand is been stressed.
WAYS TO OPTIMIZE YOUR COMPUTER WORKSTATION TO REDUCE THIS COMPUTER INJURIES
➢ Reduce screen glare
You should ensure you adjust your monitor so that it’s brightness is approximately equal to the area
behind it.
➢ The correct mouse placement
The mouse should be positioned so it keeps your arms at or below a 90degree [Link] wrist
should not be straining nor should they feel uncomfortable.
➢ Keyboard placement
Ergonomic experts recommend placing your keyboard just below elbow [Link] keyboard should
be flat on the desk or gently sloping away from you.
➢ Keep key objects close to you.
You should organize your ergonomic computer station so that your key things are close to [Link]
could include your phone ,notebooks ,water bottle and any other ease [Link] will prevent
unnecessary reaching and straining.
➢ Avoid working on bed or on the sofa
Working on bed or sofa, neck is not fully supported by an effective ergonomic [Link] also causes
back and neck pain.
Conclusions
Computer ergonomics was introduced to keep employees as active as possible to to prevent certain
injuries and body defects caused by our workstations setup.
So it is advised that every after session of your computer break, and go for a short walk .it provides
the chance of stretching your muscle s .
• Standing and sitting frequently can reduce the risk of headaches and cramps.
• Pauses and breaks are also [Link] eye fatigue by resting and refocusing your eye’s
periodically.
• Rest your eyes by covering them with your hands for 10-15seconds.
• Use correct posture when working and keep moving as much as possible.
