- Electronic Configuration: (n-1)d(1-10) ns(0-2)
- Exception: Pd [4d(10) 5s(0)]
F-Block Elements (Inner Transition Metals)
- Includes Lanthanides (4f) and Actinides (5f)
- Show variable oxidation states
- Have strong magnetic properties
Physical Properties of Transition Metals
- High tensile strength, ductility, and conductivity
- Metallic bonding leads to high melting & boiling points
- Hard except Zn, Cd, and Hg
Magnetic Properties
- Paramagnetic: At least 1 unpaired electron
- Diamagnetic: No unpaired electron
- Magnetic moment (mu) = sqrt(n(n+2)) BM
Oxidation States
- Show variable oxidation states
- Stability trend: 3d < 4d < 5d
- Mn shows the highest oxidation states
