So, when I first walked into this class, I expected it to be like my high school English classes.

expected to be given assignments about literature, and those stupid question assignments. I

was wrong Instead of that I got essay, after essay. At first, the essays were simple enough to

do; things that happened to me, and things I was interested in. But then, they got to the point

where I had absolutely no interest in the subject matter, or the subject matter depressed, or

bored me. It became more, and more of a chore to do. Not just that, but in High School they

never taught me the MLA format; It was not something that was considered important. So,

when I entered the class, and it was explained to me speedrun style in 20 minutes I had no

groundwork for it. So, I became confused. I even had to buy a book on the MLA format, that

still apparently wasn’t enough! It was only when I had a one-on-one with the teacher did, I

finally understand.

As for the subject matters, as I have stated, at first, I was interested in the things that I was

writing about. Because I got to choose what TED talk to write about, and Moth story to reflect

on. But then it started to feel more cookie cutter. I had to talk about the media we consume,

and the news. I thought I did a pretty good job at reflecting on how the media divides us. But

apparently, not good enough. And then there was the Argumentative Essay, oh boy. As I have
stated in one of my drafts I felt trapped; I felt like I was writing about things I had absolutely no

Interest in whatsoever. I was actively being punished for creativity! I get it, the point of the

class is not to be creative, it’s to learn the MLA format, and understand the basics of journalism.

But I think I would have taken to the class a little better had I been given something I was

interested in. Especially in the argumentative essay. I’m not really interested in politics; often

it depresses me. I think, that if I was given a topic that I have an actual interest in I would have

done much better. As I have done much better in my TED talk, and my Reflective essay. It is

one of my major flaws that I must overcome. If I am not interested in something, I will often

half ass it. It is a flaw that I have tried to fix for a while, but cannot. Though journalists often

must do stories that they don’t want to do.

I guess I learned that journalism just isn’t my thing. But then again, I do have a procrastination

issue so there is that. I have gotten better about it over the years. But I still have that issue.

Back in high school I had to have two teachers in a classroom just to keep on track. Now, all I

need is reminders from my mom. Now the importance of not slacking off and taking interest in
my schoolwork is even more apparent to me. I really haven’t been as into my schoolwork as I

should have been, but I think I’ve grown from this experience.
