REASONS

Grandparents often raise their grandchildren due to various factors, including parental struggles with
addiction, mental health issues, or emotional challenges that hinder stable caregiving (Saxena, 2021).
Situations like neglect, abandonment, incarceration, teen pregnancies, health problems, and financial
instability can necessitate their involvement. Some parents may leave their children with grandparents
while seeking better opportunities, while others abandon them altogether. Additionally, many
grandparents choose to care for their grandchildren out of love and a desire for connection, providing
essential stability and support.

COPING MECHANISM
Children raised by grandparents use various coping mechanisms to address their challenges. Effective
strategies include joining support groups for emotional support (McKeever, 2019), setting personal and
academic goals (Schunk & Zimmerman, 2017), and utilizing community resources like mentorship and
counseling. Open communication enhances emotional closeness (Chen & Chan, 2016), while school
participation fosters social connections (Fredricks & Eccles, 2016). Self-care practices help manage stress
(Chen & Weng, 2020), and academic support improves performance (Ritter & Schall, 2021). Coping
strategies vary by gender, with women often using emotional approaches and men favoring problem-

PERSPECTIVE

The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy notes that grandchildren raised by
grandparents often show better behavioral and mental health outcomes. Dolbin-MacNab & Stucki (2020)
highlight that grandparents impart valuable lessons and moral values through their wisdom and
experiences. However, Xu and Harrison (2023) indicate that a significant percentage of these grandchildren
may still face socioemotional and behavioral issues due to instability or perceived inequities in care.
