Project description
It is an initiative that promotes and supports international online collaboration in Latin America and the world.
It is a model in which a teacher, together with an international partner designs a project for a course that includes
learning outcomes, activities, tools or technology platforms and an evaluation for the purpose of exchanging
disciplinary and cultural content in a specific course.
For the development of this work, three professors will be supported: Professor María Leonard, MBA (University
of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and the Universidad Politecnica de Victoria from Victoria, Mexico
The project has a value of 20% of your overall grade for the semester.

Objectives
1. Build the meaning of what sustainability is in organizations and compare the differences and similarities
between U.S. and Colombian business practices for sustainable development.
2. Articulate mechanisms to propose ways to align organizational objectives with sustainable development
objectives and corporate social responsibility practices.
3. Use critical reflection to demonstrate what sustainability and CSR practices are and how they help
organizations achieve long-term development.

Project-related activities and Deliverables

This project is a group assignment (including Texas and Mexico students in each group), which will consist of an
analysis of a certain pre-assigned topic related to The groups will analyze the issue and its impact on
economic/social/environmental conditions and how businesses may be affecting it (positively or negatively). A
PEST analysis will discover the technological-political-social-economic trends that may impact the problem/issue.

The groups are expected to cite at least one examples of specific companies or nonprofit organizations for the
USA and one for Mexico who face this challenge and how their leadership has dealt with it (positively or
negatively). This report will analyze the practices of these companies in relation to sustainability, environmental,
social, legal and/or ethical issues, as well as their effects on today's society.
Each group will offer, at the end of the project, a 15-minute video covering the most relevant points in their
report and assignment requirements. All team members are expected to participate in the presentation. An
example will be provided.

Language Survey

1. Each team will be responsible for completing, in a team setting, a group written report (8 – 10 pages,
APA Guidelines, typed, and double spaced) and a video presentation that will cover relevant
information regarding a specific leadership topic. The topics of this research will be handed out to
each team once the teams are set up.

2. The group will clearly identify at least two examples of leaders and/or companies that illustrate the
concepts that are being analyzed in the paper (At least one from USA and one from Mexico). PLEASE
NOTE THAT THE COMPANIES THAT YOU CHOOSE NEED TO BE APPROVED BY THE PROFESSORS, TO
AVOID DUPLICATION. Examples of these concepts are “Leading through Change Effectively”,
“Leadership and Ethics”, etc. These examples will highlight positive and negative
management/leadership practices and the impact they have had on the specific companies or company
leaders cited in the paper.
3. Through your paper, your team will research information related to the topic to which you were
assigned. The analysis must include information regarding:
a) How do senior management and company directors handle this topic within the company?
b) Have the companies chosen shown their commitment to positive leadership, ethical behavior, and
Corporate Social Responsibility (or lack thereof)?
c) Do certain leadership styles/practices have a positive or negative effect on the financial performance of
the company? Why or why not?
4. What is the biggest contrast this group found in the research of the American and Mexican companies’
overall practices with regards to the topic being analyzed?
5. What are the similarities your group found in the research of the American and Mexican companies’
practices with regards to this topic?

6. The group MUST present recommendations of best leadership practices (specific to their research
topic) that could foster positive changes in the workplace and make an organization more effective,
regardless of country. These recommendations are an important part of this assignment, as they will
reflect the critical thinking skills of the team.
7. Students must properly reference the textbook and additional sources from which information is cited.
APA guidelines must be followed.

of their report. Every member of the team is expected to participate in the video presentation.

Group’s Video
A video (not longer than 15 minutes) covering all important aspects of the assignment will be submitted. Every
student in the group will participate in the video.

Individual Reflection
Each student will submit an individual reflection of the project.
The individual reflection will not carry a grade, but the student must turn it in to receive a grade for the
project.

Video presentations enhance students' skills beyond traditional written reports by providing an opportunity to develop and showcase their oral communication and presentation skills. This format challenges students to distill complex information into concise, engaging presentations that capture the audience's attention. Additionally, it fosters creativity in conveying ideas and builds confidence in public speaking, which are valuable skills in professional settings .

The COIL project incorporates the triple bottom line by requiring students to analyze how economic, social, and environmental dimensions impact businesses' long-term strategies. This concept is crucial for businesses today as it emphasizes balanced growth, encouraging companies to move beyond mere financial metrics and consider their broader impact on society and the environment. By integrating these aspects, businesses can achieve sustainable development and fulfill their corporate social responsibilities .

Critical reflection on sustainability and CSR enables organizations to align their operations with sustainable development goals, thereby ensuring long-term growth. The COIL project encourages students to engage in this reflection by analyzing how companies integrate sustainability and CSR into their strategies. By doing so, students learn to appreciate the role of ethical practices, environmental stewardship, and community engagement in fostering resilience and adaptability in businesses, promoting sustainable success .

Including a team charter is significant for the COIL project as it establishes a common understanding and agreement among team members regarding project objectives, roles, responsibilities, and communication protocols. The charter fosters accountability and alignment, helping to prevent conflicts and ensure that all members contribute effectively. By clearly delineating expectations and processes, it provides a roadmap for collaboration, ultimately contributing to the team's success by enhancing organization and cooperation .

Students face challenges such as cultural differences, varying business environments, and diverse leadership styles when comparing and contrasting U.S. and Mexican companies. To address these, students should approach their research with cultural sensitivity, leveraging diverse sources to gain a comprehensive view of leadership practices in both nations. They need to apply critical thinking to identify key similarities and differences, and contextually analyze the effectiveness of various leadership practices while considering socio-economic and legal environments in their research .

The COIL project fosters international collaboration by bringing together students from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Universidad Politécnica de Victoria, encouraging them to work in teams composed of members from both institutions. This setup allows students to engage in cross-cultural learning through shared projects, where they analyze sustainable business practices across U.S. and Mexican companies. The project includes activities such as ice-breakers and language surveys to improve communication and cultural understanding, ultimately aiming to compare and contrast business practices and develop a deeper understanding of sustainability in a global context .

Language surveys help in forming groups by matching students according to their Spanish/English proficiency levels. This ensures effective communication within the groups, fostering collaborative work and understanding across different cultures. By aligning language skills, the project aims to minimize communication barriers, thereby enhancing the quality of interaction and collaboration, ultimately leading to more robust outcomes such as detailed analyses of international business practices .

The expected deliverables for the COIL project include a group-written report, a 15-minute video presentation, and individual reflections. These deliverables reflect students' learning as they require comprehensive research, critical analysis, and synthesis of information regarding leadership and sustainability practices. Collaboration is embodied in team-based activities, where students apply their language skills and cultural insights to produce coherent and integrated outputs, displaying their understanding of international business challenges .

Conducting a PEST analysis is crucial in the COIL project as it provides students with a structured framework to assess the political, economic, social, and technological factors impacting business issues. This analysis enables students to understand the broader context within which businesses operate and the external factors influencing sustainability efforts. The PEST framework benefits students by enhancing their analytical skills, promoting critical thinking, and preparing them to make informed recommendations for aligning business practices with sustainable development goals .

Analyzing both positive and negative management practices is important as it provides a holistic view of how leadership decisions impact company performance and employee engagement. This comprehensive analysis helps students identify best practices and potential pitfalls in leadership strategies. By examining different cases, students can develop a nuanced understanding of the implications of leadership decisions, which is essential for making well-informed recommendations for future business strategies .
