Science - Short and Long Answer Questions

Short Answer Type

1. Describe scientific discovery.

Scientific discovery is the process of finding new knowledge about the natural world through

observation, investigation, experimentation, and analysis. It helps us understand how things work

and solve problems in everyday life.

2. How does science help us understand the world?

Science helps us understand the world by explaining natural phenomena through facts and

evidence. It answers questions about how and why things happen, helping us make informed

decisions and improve our lives.

3. Give an example demonstrating the application of scientific method in our daily life.

Example: If your mobile phone suddenly stops charging, you may observe the problem, guess that

the charger might be faulty, test it with another phone, and then conclude whether the issue is with

the charger or the phone. This is the scientific method in action.

4. What is the scope of scientific discovery?

The scope of scientific discovery is vast-it ranges from understanding the smallest particles like

atoms to exploring the universe. It includes various fields such as medicine, agriculture, space,

environment, and technology, improving our quality of life.

5. What makes learning science enjoyable?

Learning science is enjoyable because it satisfies our curiosity, involves hands-on experiments,

encourages critical thinking, and helps us understand the world around us in a fun and interesting

way.

6. Describe the importance of teamwork in science.

Teamwork in science is important because many scientific discoveries and experiments require the

collaboration of people with different skills and knowledge. Working together allows scientists to
share ideas, solve problems faster, and achieve better results.

Long Answer Type

1. Science is not confined to laboratories. Explain this statement giving examples.

Science is not limited to laboratories; it is present in our everyday lives. For example, when a cook

experiments with different ingredients to create a new dish, they are using scientific methods.

Farmers use science to decide the best time to sow seeds or use fertilizers. A mechanic checking

why a car won't start follows a step-by-step scientific approach-observing, testing, and concluding.

Even children asking questions and exploring answers are practicing science. These examples

show that science is a way of thinking and solving problems, not just something done in labs.

2. Describe the role of observation and experimentation in the scientific method.

Observation and experimentation are key parts of the scientific method.

- Observation is the first step, where a person notices something unusual or interesting. It helps in

identifying a problem or a question. For example, if a bulb is not lighting up, observing that it's not

glowing is the first step.

- Experimentation is the process of testing different possibilities to find a solution. After forming a

hypothesis (a possible explanation), we perform experiments to test it. For instance, changing the

bulb or checking the switch can be part of an experiment to find the cause.

Together, observation helps us frame the problem, and experimentation helps us find the solution

with evidence. These steps make science a systematic and reliable way of understanding the world.
