Overview of Machine Learning Concepts

Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI) focused on algorithms that improve automatically through experience and data. It builds models from training data to make predictions or decisions without explicit programming, applicable in fields like medicine and computer vision. The concept was popularized by Arthur Samuel in 1959 and has since evolved into various complex applications.

Return to Glossary

Machine Learning (ML) is the study of computer algorithms that improve automatically through
experience and by the use of data. 1) It is seen as a part of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Machine learning
algorithms build a model based on sample data, known as “training data”, in order to make predictions
or decisions without being explicitly programmed to do so.2) Machine learning algorithms are used in a
wide variety of applications, such as in medicine, email filtering, and computer vision, where it is difficult
or unfeasible to develop conventional algorithms to perform the needed tasks.3)

The definition “without being explicitly programmed” is often attributed to Arthur Samuel, who coined
the term “machine learning” in 1959, but the phrase is not found verbatim in this publication, and maybe
a paraphrase that appeared later. Confer “Paraphrasing Arthur Samuel (1959), the question is: How can
computers learn to solve problems without being explicitly programmed?” in Koza, John R.; Bennett,
