The Poet X & Character Types

 What happened in what we read of The Poet X for today?


o Xiomara and Aman kissed, and she enjoyed it
 She gains stronger feelings for him from that, she wants to escalate
their relationship to a more physical level
 She wants to do more, but she gets nervous and pulls away
 X is keeping things from Aman (he doesn’t know she isn’t allowed
to date)
o Xavier is gay, he has a crush on a boy named Cody
 Xavier has a black eye, he got hit at school
 He holds a grudge against X for going to his school because she
sees Cody and learns about his sexuality
o X goes to a Halloween party; she sneaks out to do so because she is not
allowed to go to this party
 She uses Twin and Caridad as an excuse to go to the party
o Aman gave X the stage name “The Poet X”
o Father Sean’s mother died several years ago, but X never paid attention
to him (or anyone else really)
 He also used to be a boxer
 Understanding characters
o It seems like all of the characters in this book are hiding something and
keeping secrets from each other. Why don’t the characters in this book
communicate with each other and tell each other what is going on in their
heads and lives? What would happen if they did?
 Character types
o Protagonist – the leading or main character of a text
o Antagonist – the adversary or opponent posed against the protagonist
 Usually a barrier to the protagonist achieving something
 Antagonists are not always evil
o Secondary characters – supporting characters who are not the primary
focus of the story
o Dynamic characters – characters who change over the duration of the
story
 Usually, the protagonist is this
o Static characters – characters who change very little over the duration of
the story
 Usually secondary characters are static
o Foils – a character who contrasts against another character
 Usually, the protagonist and antagonist are foils of each other
 Who are the characters of this novel
o Xiomara
o Xavier (Twin)
o Caridad
o Aman
o Mami
o Father Sean
o Papi
o Cody (White Boy)
o Ms. Galiano

Context in Literature

 4 types of context in literature


o Historical context
 What is happening in history during the time period of the book or
factors in history that led to the plot of the book
o Physical context
 Where are we physically?
 Ex: Xiomara’s room
 Are we are the beach, are we in Cincinnati, Ohio?
o Cultural context
 In The Poet X, there are a number of cultural contexts we have to
keep in mind
 Religious
 Dominican Republic
 Gender
o Machismo – toxic masculinity
 This is something that we see Mami exhibit
 She wants Xiomara to be a listener and a
follower
 These three are interconnected and influence each other
 Ex: DR Catholicism
o Situational context
 How does a character respond to what is happening around them?
