LIFE ORIENTATION
PROJECT
HTS MIDDELBURG.
Activity 1:
[Link] the term substance abuse:
Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of
psychoactive substances, including alcohol and drugs,
characterized by an inability to control consumption, leading to
significant adverse consequences for the individual and those
around them
[Link] two factors that may contribute to young people
abusing substances:
Peer Pressure: The influence of Friends- or social groups can
encourage experimentation or continued use of substances
Mental Health Issues: Conditions such as depression or anxiety
may lead individuals to turn to drugs or alcohol.
[Link] how being exposed to high prevalent rates of
substance abuse could negatively impact social life in
communities:
High rates of substance abuse in communities can lead to
increased crime rates, including violent crimes and theft, which
undermine community safety. It can also strain community
resources, such as healthcare and social services, and
deteriorate the overall quality of life.
[Link] how substance abuse could negatively impact
young people’s physical wellbeing:
Physical Wellbeing: Substance abuse can lead to severe health
Issues such as liver damage, heart disease, and respiratory
problems, affecting overall physical health and vitality.
[Link] two ways in which drug abuse their future careers:
young people to effectively pursue could negatively impact
the ability of young people to effectively pursue thei future
careers:
• Impaired Cognitive Function: Drug abuse can impair cognitive
functions such as memory and concentration, hindering academic
performance and the ability to acquire necessary skills for career
advancement.
Increased Absenteeism: Substance abuse often leads to frequent
absenteeism from school or work, which can impact academic
success and job performance, limiting future career opportunities.
Activity 2:
[Link] the term youth risky behavior:
Youth risky behavior refers to actions taken by young people that
increase their likelihood of experiencing negative health or social
outcomes, These behaviors include substance abuse, unsafe
sexual practices, reckless driving, and involvement in criminal
activities
[Link] FIVE critical factors that may contribute to young
people deciding to engage in risky behaviors:
Peer Influence: The desire to fit in or be accepted by peers can
lead to risky behaviors like drug use or unsafe sexual practices
Family Environment: A dysfunctional family environment,
including lack of parental supervision or exposure to substance
abuse at home, can increase the likelihood of risky behavior.
Mental Health Issues: Conditions such as depression, anxiety,
or low self-esteem can lead to self- destructive behaviors as a
form of coping.
Socioeconomic Status: Poverty and lack of access to resources
can contribute to engagement in risky behaviors as individuals
may seek immediate gratification or be exposer higher risks.
Media and Cultural Influences: Exposure to media and cultural
norms that glamorize or normalize risky behaviors can influence
young people to imitate these behaviors.
[Link] ONE way in which considering healthy lifestyle
choices may persuade young people not to engage in risky
behavior:
Promotion of Positive Peer Relationships: Encouraging young
people to engage in healthy activities and build positive
relationships with peers who value and practice healthy lifestyles
can create a supportive environment that discourages risky
behavior. For example, participating in sports or community
activities with friends who prioritize well-being an provide a sense
of belonging and fulfillment that reduces the appeal of risky
behaviors.
[Link] why existing awareness programs against
unhealthy lifestyle choices seem ineffective in instilling good
decision-making skills for young people to change their
behavior:
Lack of Personal Relevance: Many awareness programs fail to
connect with the personal experiences and immediate needs of
young people. If the information presented doesn’t resonate with
their daily lives or feels too abstract, they may not see the value in
changing their behavior.
Insufficient Follow-up and Support: Awareness programs often
provide information but lack ongoing support and resources for
behavior change. Without continuous engagement and practical
tools to make healthy choices, young people may struggle to
apply what they've learned in real-life situations.
[Link] TWO ways in which abuse of alcohol could affect
attempts by young people to live healthier personal lives:
Impaired Judgment and Decision- Making: Alcohol abuse can
impair cognitive functions and judgment, leading to poor decision-
making and increased likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors
such as unsafe sex or drug use, which can derail efforts to live a
healthier lifestyle.
Physical and Mental Health Consequences: Chronic alcohol
abuse can result in health issues like liver disease, cardiovascular
Problems, and mental health disorders such as depression
These health problems can severely pact a young person’s
overall well-being and their ability to pursue and maintain a
healthy lifestyle.
[Link] discuss how the scarcity of support systems or
advisory services in some communities could hamper young
people's efforts to effectively deal with their urge to engage
in risky behavior:
Limited Access to Resources: In communities with scarce support
systems, young people may have limited access to counseling,
therapy, or educational programs that address substance abuse
and risky behaviors. This lack of access can make it difficult for
them to receive the necessary guidance and intervention to
manage their urges.
Social Stigma and Isolation: The absence of visible support
systems n contribute to a stigma surrounding seeking help,
causing young people to feel isolated or ashamed of their
struggles. This social stigma can discourage them from reaching
out for support, thereby perpetuating risky behaviors and
undermining their efforts to make positive changes.
Activity 5:
[Link] evidence-based strategies could be implemented to
mitigate risky behavior among young people:
Implement Comprehensive School Programs: Develop and
support school-based programs that integrate education on risky
behaviors, skills development, and emotional support. Evidence
shows that comprehensive programs can effectively reduce risky
behavior.
Strengthen Community Support Systems: Create and enhance
community resources such as counseling services, youth clubs,
and mentorship programs that provide guidance and support to
young people.
2. Assess How an Advocacy Campaign to Create a
Supportive Environment for Young People Could Affect Their
Career Outcomes:
Enhanced Support Structures: An advocacy campaign can lead
to improved support systems and resources, helping young
people make better decisions and develop skills that positively
impact their career prospects.
Increased Awareness and Engagement: By raising awareness
and promoting healthy behaviors, the campaign can reduce risky
behaviors, leading to fewer disruptions in education and work,
and better career outcomes in the long term.
[Link] Discussion on Assisting Young People to Make
Informed Career Decisions:
Career Guidance: Incorporate career counseling into programs
that address risky behaviors. This helps young people see a
direct link between avoiding risky behaviors and achieving their
career goals, making the benefits of good decision-making more
tangible.
Skill Development Workshops: Provide workshops that
enhance skills related to both career planning and managing risky
behaviors. Skills such as goal setting, time management, and
decision-making can be crucial for both career success and
avoiding risky behaviors.
Internships and Job Shadowing: Offer opportunities for
internships or job shadowing to give young people a clearer
understanding of various career paths. Experiencing the
professional environment firsthand can motivate them to stay
focused and avoid behaviors that could jeopardize their career
prospects.
Mentorship Programs: Pair young people with mentors who can
provide guidance and support. Mentors can share their own
experiences, including how they managed challenges and
avoided risky behaviors to succeed in their careers.
ACTIVITY 6:
Firstly it increased my awareness:
Understanding Complexity: Participation in this project has
deepened my understanding of the complexity surrounding youth
risky behavior, including the various social, psychological, and
environmental factors that contribute to it.
Importance of Education: I now appreciate the crucial role of
education and awareness in preventing risky behaviors and how
targeted interventions can significantly impact youth outcome.
Secondly It Changed My Empathy and Perspective:
Relatability: Engaging with real-life data and perspectives has
increased my empathy towards young people struggling with risky
behaviors. I have gained a better appreciation for the challenges
they face and the importance of supportive interventions.
