Character Analysis
1. Who Am I (Character)? This should be AT LEAST one paragraph discussing who you
(character) really are
2. What Time Is It? Century, year, day, time of day. Anything time related that affects the
scene.
3. Where Am I? What country, city, house room, area of the room, etc.
4. What Surrounds Me? Animate and inanimate objects, people, etc. Feel free to also chart
it out if it helps you.
5. What are the Given Circumstances? Political, Social, Environmental, Religious, Economic
and Time factors of the play that affect the scene. Also, what just happened before the
scene that affects you now?
6. What Is My Relationship? Your relationship to the other characters. How do you feel
about them? What is your relationship to the events of the play and other aspects?
7. What Do I Want? What is your Super Objective? What is your Objective for the scene?
8. What’s In My Way? What are your Obstacles?
9. What Do I DO To Get What I Want? What are your Tactics? List them. What are your
physical actions?
10. How Badly Do I Want It? Discuss the stakes of the scene.
11. What Seems Easy For You (Actor) To Do In The Scene?
12. What Seems Difficult For You (Actor) To Do In The Scene?
13. With What Aspects Can You (Actor) Most Easily Identify In The Scene, Play?
14. What Aspects Do You (Actor) Find Most Difficult To Identify With In The Scene, Play?
15. What Animal Images Might You Associate Your Character With? Why?
16. With What Animate or Inanimate Objects Might You Associate Your Character? Why?
17. What Does Your Character Say About Him/Herself? Look through the entire play several
times. List page numbers as well.
18. What Do Other Characters Say About You? We are shaped by others opinions. Look
through the entire play several times. List page numbers as well.

19. What Does The Playwright Say About You? Search the entire play and the Stage
Directions. List page numbers as well.
20. What Do You DO Throughout The Course Of The Play? Character is defined through
ACTION. List page numbers as well.
21. Given The Circumstances, IF You Were The Character, How Would You Act/React? What
Would You Do And How Would You Feel? This is where you put yourself in the character’s
shoes. Remember, it’s not a “if I were you I would…” Rather, it is where you connect with
the character.
