The novel “A Court of Thorns and Roses” is the first book from the series written by
Sarah J. Maas, which contains a fantasy romance story.
The narrative starts in the middle of winter in Feyre’s village, a small area located in
the south of the mortal lands. It is a place where only humans can safely live on the other
side of the wall, far away from the faeries who lived in Prythian, which is divided into
seven courts ruled by High Lords, also known as High Faes.
The main characters in the story are three. Feyre Archeron, the female lead, is a 19-
year-old girl who has to take care of his family after they became poor. This circumstance
would make her a cold and isolated person, but also a brave and skillful huntress who
would sacrifice anything to bring food and money to her family’s table. Then, there’s
Tamlin, the male lead, an immortal faerie who is the High Lord from the Spring Court. He
is a man of few words due to his responsibility as a ruler, but he also is a warrior who
always protects his lands and his people from the attacks of the monsters. Last but not least,
there’s Lucien, who plays as Tamlin’s emissary and is always at his beck and call. He is
another immortal faerie from the Summer Court who can’t trust Feyre for killing his friend,
so he adopts a curmudgeon attitude towards her, undecided if he should let her die or not.
The first chapters follow Feyre’s current life as a huntress who had to start working
at a young age since his father lost all his fortune, making them live a common life in a
cottage. One day, Feyre goes to hunt in the forest, hoping to find some animal to kill and
get money and food from it. Nevertheless, she didn’t expect to find a wolf faerie hunting
close to her, a dangerous specie with strong powers that make them able to kill humans so
easily. She ends up doing him in, but this action would cost her life when a big golden wolf
pays her a visit to her family, claiming for the one who broke the Treaty's peace rule
between humans and faeries. As a consequence, she has to go to Prythian and take the place
of the faerie that she killed, where she will be at Tamlin and Lucien’s mercy and live with
them for the rest of her life. There, she will try to escape to go back to her family; she will
create new relationships with the people around her and also love a creature she didn’t
expect to fall in love with. She will try to survive in Prythian, a place that is being tortured
by a strange blight that weakens faeries’s powers and where nobody around her breathes a
word about its secrets.
The character that I feel most identified is with Feyre. As an older sister, I can also
feel the weight that comes with the responsibility of taking care of my siblings. Even if she
is not the oldest sister, and neither I have to work so my family doesn’t starve to death, we
both worry for our blood in our own way, and we try to do our best so they can live a happy
life.
