And few other questions
Assalamu alaikum..
Failed by Obayed sir..

1. 3/E has taken crankshaft deflection of M/E and the reading he

has got is beyond the limit.. What is the problem and what course
of actions will you take in that situation.. ( Actually sir wanted to
hear that I'll verify first whether the procedure of taking deflection
is correct or not by 3/E, Stability & trim of ship is okay or not. HE
Wanted to hear this first but I missed.)
2. One compressor has been damaged during manoeuvring and it
is not possible to repair as no spares are available onboard. What
course of actions will you take? ( I have to check the condition of
other compressor that the condition is satisfactory or not, 4/E
used correct grade of LO or not. He wanted to hear that points
too.)
3. Shore LO analysis report is showing high water content of one
generator. What is your action? ( 3/E followed the correct
sampling procedures or not.. It has to be verified first.. Sir wanted
to hear that first.)
4. Batch purification. ( As far I remember that I found somewhere,
after transferring to settling or renovating tank we will have to
keep the tank temperature around 60°C. He didn't accept that
temperature limit.. Temperature should be kept around 80°C as
per his instruction.)
5. Boiler survey is finished and during the survey, surveyor
checked the safety valve by dismantling all parts. Now what items
will you check from boxing up the safety valve until fitting back
on boiler and how will you carry out pressure testing after fitting
back. (He didn't accept 3% or 10% excess of maximum working
pressure which is written on chotha. )
Few more questions which I can't remember now.

* The questions are very basic but he asked in a technical way.. I

think they ask to every person in that way but we only share the
key points.. Unfortunately maximum persons don't share the
questions..
If we share the questions explaining the faults and suggestions
from examiner, it will be very much helpful for everyone to pass
easily.. Otherwise everyone will miss the points what they
actually want.
Thanks..

The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) is crucial for enhancing the energy efficiency of a ship’s operation by providing a systematic approach for monitoring and improving energy use. It is aligned with the IMO's GHG strategy, which targets a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from maritime shipping. SEEMP provides mechanisms for continuous improvement in operational efficiencies that contribute towards achieving the targeted reductions as set by the IMO, encouraging ships to adopt measures such as optimized routing and speed adjustments .

Following a grounding, the second engineer must assess engine and hull integrity, check for water ingress, and report findings to the captain. Immediate actions include securing the engine, using bilges to pump out water if necessary, and aiding damage assessment by conducting below-deck inspections. Coordination with the ship's bridge is crucial to provide updates and assist with subsequent maneuver attempts or emergency measures. Communication with shore-based management and classification societies for further guidance on the situation may also be necessary .

When a crankcase oil mist detector alarm is activated, the second engineer should immediately reduce the engine speed and follow emergency protocols to prevent an explosion. The engine should be stopped if safe to do so, and the crankcase should be ventilated before inspection. The situation requires checking for hot spots, oil leaks, and excessive temperatures. It is crucial to ensure that the ventilation fans are operating adequately and communications should be maintained with the bridge and engine control room during the entire process .

In case the Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) on a ship bound for Australia fails and cannot be immediately rectified, the ship must notify the Australian Authorities through the appropriate maritime channels. It must apply for permission to discharge ballast water in accordance with Australia's emergency procedures, which may involve using alternative ballast water management methods or keeping the ballast onboard if it's safe to do so. Documentation justifying the inability to use the BWTS should be provided, and continuous communication with authorities is essential .

A ship might achieve an 'E' rating on the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) due to high energy consumption relative to its type and size, possibly because of operational inefficiencies, older engine technology, or lack of energy-saving devices. Corrective actions could include optimizing route plans and speed, implementing energy-saving retrofits like air lubrication systems, or improving operational practices. Efficiency measures like switching to lower carbon intensity fuels or improving hull and propeller maintenance can also contribute to enhancing the EEXI rating .

The Condition Monitoring Survey (CMS) is conducted to assess the operational state of machinery and systems on board a vessel. The procedure begins with planning and identifying critical systems for analysis, followed by conducting inspections, such as vibration analysis and oil sampling, according to maintenance schedules. The Chief Engineer can survey items related to the engine and electrical systems, except those reserved for certified surveyors, such as some aspects of the main propulsion and safety systems. Appropriate records and reports must be maintained for further evaluation and auditing .

An In-Water Survey (IWS) is conducted with the vessel afloat, allowing surveys and inspections of the submerged parts using divers or remotely operated vehicles, typically focusing on the hull, propeller, and other appendages. Meanwhile, an Underwater Survey (UWS) specifically involves detailed inspections and possible repairs of the underwater parts. Preparations include ensuring divers are certified and equipment is suitable for the task. Both require thorough coordination with classification societies, preparing relevant documentation, and ensuring ship stability during the survey .

Preparation for an ISM audit involves ensuring that all safety management system (SMS) documents are up to date, including procedures and records of drills, maintenance, and incidents. The crew should be trained and familiar with safety protocols, emergency procedures, and reporting systems. Any non-conformities identified in previous audits must be rectified, and evidence of corrective actions should be available. It is also important to review key operational procedures and ensure the allocation of responsibilities is clearly defined and understood within the ship’s manpower .

A soot fire in the boiler's uptake could potentially lead to structural damage, leaks, and fires spreading, causing extensive damage and shutdown of the boiler. Immediate steps include closing the air registers to starve the fire of oxygen, using soot blowers to clear deposits, and monitoring temperatures to prevent escalation. After extinguishing the fire, an inspection should identify the root cause, such as excessive soot, poor combustion, or oil leaks. Regular maintenance and tests should be reinforced to prevent recurrence, alongside logging the incident details .

If a scrubber system fault cannot be rectified within one hour, the vessel might be in violation of international sulphur emissions regulations, as scrubbers are used to clean exhaust gases. In such cases, the ship must switch to using compliant fuels with acceptable sulfur content or risk penalties and potential detention. The incident must be recorded in the ship's logbook, and a notification should be sent to the relevant authorities, explaining the fault and action taken. Preparing a Non-Compliance Report is also advisable to maintain transparency and compliance efforts .
