Introduction

Area is the amount of space inside boundary of 2D objects. It is a quantity that expresses
extent of a 2D figure or shape. Its unit is in cm2, m2, hectare, acre etc. Thus, Area of a figure
is a number in some unit, associated with the part enclosed by the figure.

Application of Area

1. If you want to get your home wall painted, you need to know the area of wall to find
the cost of painting, if cost of painting per m2 is given.
2. If a man wants to divide his land equally among his children, then he should know
area.

Relationship between congruency & Area

Two figures are called congruent, if they have the same shape and the same size.

If 2 figures are congruent, in they must have equal area, but the converse is not true.

If A and B are two congruent figures, then ar(A) = ar(B);

Area sum Property:

Sometime we need to find the area of complex figures which is made up of simple figures. If
a planar region formed by a figure T is made up of two non-overlapping planar regions
formed by figures P and Q, then ar(T) = ar(P) + ar(Q)

In the figure above, Area of cartoon = ar(A) + ar(B) + ar(C) + ar(D) + ar(E) + ar(F)

Parallelogram in Same base & parallel

Theorem 1. Parallelograms on the same base (or equal bases) and between the same parallels
are equal in area.

If ABCD & ABEF have common base AB & are between same parallels AB || FC, then
ar(ABCD) = ar(ABEF)

Please refer to ExamFear video lessons for Proof of this theorem.

Converse Theorem 2: Parallelograms on the same base (or equal bases) and having equal
areas lie between the same parallels.

In figure above: If ar(ABCD) = ar(ABEF) & ABCD & ABEF have common base AB, then
they will be between same parallels AB || FC.

Triangle in Same base & parallel

Theorem 3: Two triangles on the same base (or equal bases) and between the same parallels
are equal in area.

In the figure above, ΔABC & ΔABE are on same base AB & between same parallels AB ||
EC, thus

ar(ΔABC) = ar(ΔABE).

Please refer to ExamFear video lessons for Proof of this theorem.

Converse Theorem 4: Two triangles having the same base (or equal bases) and equal areas
lie between the same parallels.

In the figure above, ΔABC & ΔABE are on same base AB & have equal area ar(ΔABC) =
ar(ΔABE).

Thus these two triangles have to be between same parallels AB || EC.

Please refer to Learnohub video lessons for Proof of this theorem.

More triangle Properties

• Area of a triangle is half the product of its base and the corresponding altitude.
ar(ΔABC) = ½ * AB * EC, where EC is the height & AB is the base
• A median of a triangle divides it into two triangles of equal areas. In the ΔABC
below, FC is the median, thus ar(ΔAFC) = ar(ΔFBC).
