Writing is the way of using written words to express ideas or opinions, it may come
with a variety of forms such as books, poems, stories, essays, and many others.
As a learner, you encounter several academic writing activities to help you grasp
and comprehend various reading materials.

then, but what exactly do you know about academic writing? How do you know
that you are writing in an academic way?

Students, teachers, and researchers in various fields use academic writing

to present ideas, make arguments, and engage in scholarly conversations.
Academic writing is characterized by evidence-based arguments, precise word
choice, logical organization, and an impersonal tone. It informs, analyzes, and
persuades in a straightforward manner and enables the reader to engage
critically in a scholarly dialogue.

Most academic disciplines employ their own stylistic conventions. However,

all academic writing shares the following characteristics.

1. Clear and limited focus

The focus of an academic paper is established early by the thesis statement.

Every paragraph and sentence of the paper connects to that primary focus

2. Logical structure

All academic writing follows a logical, straightforward structure. In its

simplest form, academic writing includes an introduction, body paragraphs, and
a conclusion.

The introduction provides background information, lays out the scope and
direction of the essay, and states the thesis.
The body paragraphs support the thesis statement, with each body
paragraph elaborating on one supporting point.
The conclusion refers back to the thesis, summarizes the main points, and
highlights the implications of the paper's findings. Each sentence and
paragraph logically connects to the next in order to present a clear
argument.

3. Evidence-based arguments

Academic writing requires well-informed arguments Statements must be

supported by evidence, whether from scholarly sources, results of a study or
experiment, or quotations from a primary text. The use of evidence gives
credibility to an argument.

4. Impersonal tone

Academic writing uses a serious, educated, and formal language similar to

what is used in schools. To achieve this, it should avoid emotional,

disagree with an idea, it must be presented accurately and objectively in your
paper.

Academic writing is an important skill. It is used to explain some ideas

or research findings and to persuade readers that your explanation or theory

Academic writing demonstrates a high level of critical thinking and

analysis as reflected in the following types:

Essays - an essay is a prose composition that closely resembles a
conversation. It deals with a subject from a personal point of view. An essay
is an extended piece of writing that presents and supports a thesis or
proposition. The word essay is derived from the Latin word ‘exagium’, which
means the presentation of a case. When you write an essay, you are
making a case for the validity of a particular point of view, analysis,
interpretation, or set of facts or procedures.

Reports - these are stories on newspapers, radio, or television about

important events or gives information about something. It is a specific form
of writing that is organized around concisely identifying and examining
issues, events, or findings that have happened in a physical sense, such as
events that have occurred within an organization, or findings from a
research investigation.

Literature Reviews - a kind of text that explores and comments on other

studies that have been conducted about a specific topic or issue.
Reproduction of these reviews is not allowed, except by quality of a book,
movie or film, performance, product, etc. It provides an overview of current
knowledge. allowing you to identify relevant theories, methods, and gaps in
the existing research about a particular product or topic.

Case Study - a published report about a person, group, or a situation in

real life that provides a deeper and more complete understanding of a
complex concept under study. A case study can be defined as an intensive
study about a person or a group of people or unit which is aimed to
generalize over several units.

Reflective Writing - a type of writing where one relates ideas or concepts

to his/her experiences in life. It gives the writer insights that may lead to
further leaming. Reflective writing is used in an academic setting to
examine one's response to a new experience or piece of writing.

General Characteristics of Academic Writing

Focused - answers the research problem or questions on a topic

Clear - clarity or vividness of words used
Coherent - logical and well organized; easy to understand
Process-oriented - writing academic texts observes the following steps;

3. Gathering data or conducting researches
4. Drafting
5. Editing and revising of content, grammar, spelling, and punctuations

Essay Writing

An essay is a type of academic writing about a single subject. It presents

the comments or opinions of the writer on a particular subject. Most of the
essays that you often encounter as a student include, but are not limited to,
book reviews, magazine articles, and essay writing.

Kinds of Essay According to Style

There are two kinds of essays based on their style. A formal essay is
carefully organized and serious in tone, while an informal essay is written in
a casual, conversational style. The table below gives a clear comparison of
the two kinds.

The following examples highlight the differences presented earlier in the table on
page 6.

Formal:
This extended essay on how the lyrics of hip-hop developed as a form of
protest against a society segregating the working classes is based on the promise
of the music having a distinct and energizing rhythm that really inspires people to
move thereby reaching out to audiences who would not normally believe in protest,
let alone speak out in public. Thus, hip-hop music becomes a vehicle for words of
protest that can and indeed have changed the world. My own experience with
dancing hip-hop at a relatively advanced and skilled level fueled my desire to
research this topic in more depth.

Informal:
I decided to write an extended essay on how hip-hop works as a protest of the
lower classes because I think the music is cool and really gets people dancing.
inspiring those people who wouldn't normally think there's any point in being
against anything to listen to the message. Being an enthusiastic hip-hop dancer,
myself, I really wanted to find out some more about this.
Kinds of Essay According to Paragraph Development

Descriptive Essay - creates an impression in all effects or images about the

subject.
Narrative Essay - discusses a course or series of events.
Contrast Essay - develops the relationship of two or more things.
Persuasive Essay - convinces the reader to agree with an opinion backed up
by a strong supporting detail.
Argumentative Essay - addresses controversial issues where disagreements
occur.

Writing an essay may be overwhelming. You might wonder where to start, but
what matters is that you can start by doing it correctly. Careful planning is the
secret to a successful essay.
Remember that an essay is composed of a group of related paragraphs that
work together to present one main point. It has three parts:

1. Introduction - presents the main points

2. Body - consists of two or more paragraphs that support or explain the main
point of the essay
3. Conclusion - summarizes the main point and brings the essay to a close

In studies and future work, you will often be asked to write a well-organized
composition to show your knowledge on different topics.

I am a Filipino - inheritor of a glorious past, hostage to the uncertain

future. As such, I must prove equal to a two-fold task – the task of meeting
my responsibility to the past, and the task of performing my obligation to the
future.

I am sprung from a hardy race child many generations removed of

ancient Malayan pioneers. Across the centuries, the memory comes rushing
back to me of brown-skinned men putting out to sea in ships that were as
frail as their hearts were stout. Over the sea I see them come, borne upon
the billowing wave and the whistling wind, carried upon the mighty swell of
hope - hope in the free abundances of the ne land that was to be their home
and their children's forever.

This is the land they sought and found. Every inch of shore that their
eyes first set upon, every hill and mountain that beckoned to them with a
green and purple Invitation, every mile of rolling plain that their view
encompassed, every river and lake that promised a plentiful living and the
fruitfulness of commerce, is a hollowed spot to me

By the strength of their hearts and hands, by every right of law, human
and divine, this land and all the appurtenances thereof-the black and fertile
soil, the seas and lakes and rivers teeming with fish, the forests with their
inexhaustible wealth in wild and timber, the mountains with their bowels

I am a Filipino, in my blood runs the immortal seed of heroes-seed that

of Jose Rizal that morning in Bagumbayan when a volley of shots put an end
to all that was mortal of him and made his spirit deathless forever, the same
that flowered in the hearts of Bonifacio in Balintawak, of Gregorio del Pilar at
Tirad Pass, of Antonio Luna at Calumpit, that bloomed in flowers of
frustration in the sad heart of Emilio Aguinaldo at Palanan and yet burst forth
royally again in the proud heart of Manuel L. Quezon when he stood at last
on the threshold of ancient Malacañang Palace, in the symbolic act of
possession and racial vindication.

The seed I bear within me is an Immortal seed. It is the mark of my

manhood, the symbol of my dignity as a human being. Like the seeds that
were once buried in the tomb of Tutankhamen many thousands of years
ago, it shall grow and flower and bear fruit again. It is the insight of my race,
and my generation is but a stage in the unending search of my people for
freedom and happiness.

I am a Filipino, child of the marriage of the East and the West. The East,
with its languor and mysticism, its passivity and endurance, was my mother,
and my sire was the West that came thundering across the seas with the
Cross and Sword and the Machine I am of the East, an eager participant in
its struggles for liberation from the Imperialist yoke. But I know also that the
