Case Study #1 pg. 31

Zena is a home health care aide. She is assisting an 83-year-old woman to dress
herself when the woman stumbles and slumps to the floor. As Zena gets down to
help her the woman begins to cry and says “I am so useless; I can’t do anything
anymore.” What should Zena do? What might Zena say?

Well, I think Zena should make sure that the woman is physically well, checking for
any injuries after the fall and helping her to sit down or to a comfortable position. You
should provide physical and emotional comfort such as holding the woman's hand or
gently placing a hand on her shoulder to comfort her and reassure her that you are there
to help her.

You could validate the woman's feelings by acknowledging that it must be very
frustrating and that it's completely normal to feel that way sometimes. You can also
offer words of encouragement stressing that the woman is valuable and that she is doing
her best even on difficult days. Zena should reaffirm her role as an assistant by assuring
the woman that she is there to help her and that together they will find ways to make
things easier. Finally, she could foster the woman's independence by working together
so that she can continue to do what she can for herself with Zena, supporting her in the
rest.
The scene from the show I chose was a scene from the Lion King and I'll use the scene
where Simba and Scar have a tense exchange before their big final battle.
Scene with only the sound on and screen off
Well, when I saw it just with the sound, it's evident that Scar was manipulating Simba,
trying to make him feel guilty for Mufasa's death, since Scar's tone of voice was super
sarcastic, while Simba's is at first very insecure, but then it becomes much firmer, I
could perceive the tension and confrontation without seeing, but the visual details are
obviously lost.
Scene with only the screen on and sound off
Here it was the opposite, while in the other only with the sound it became evident to me,
it was a confrontation without sound and with the screen on, the body language became
more difficult for me, since the villain Scar was quite relaxed but very calculating, with
gestures like arrogance that indicate deception, but on the other hand Simba showed
some signs of doubt and submission, at first he straightens up and faces Scar with more
confidence.
Scene with sound and screen on
This is already different because I can use both senses to understand the scene
completely and the message that the scene wants to convey becomes clear, Scar was
trying to play with Simba's emotions to maintain his control, but Simba, remembering
who he is, confronts Scar with determination and that's it, that combination of tones of
voice and the facial expressions of the characters helped me to see how it reinforces his
character Scar's manipulator while Simba's transformation is more powerful by seeing
and hearing his evolution simultaneously

Body language vs dialogue

With only sound: I lost important details of the characters' expressions that give more
context to their words.
With just the image: I captured the emotional dynamics and tension but lacked clarity
in Scar's specific motives and verbal manipulations.
With both: I could obviously understand perfectly the message given.
