For generations, Bát Tràng pottery village has upheld its


reputation as the cradle of Vietnam's traditional ceramics. From raw clay,
seemingly lifeless, the skilled hands of artisans transform it into exquisite
ceramic pieces, rich in both artistic and practical value. Creating a finished
ceramic product requires meticulous craftsmanship through multiple

00:18 - 00:27 Firstly, the craftsman selects the appropriate clay, usually
white or green clay from Phú Thọ and Yên Bái regions. The clay is soaked
in water, thoroughly stirred, and filtered multiple times to remove
impurities, ensuring the final product's durability.

00:28 - 00:38: Instead of traditional hand-shaping methods usually used in


the past, workshops nowadays utilize pre-made plaster molds. By simply
pouring a mixture of clay, water, and chemicals into the mold, a raw
ceramic piece is formed in just 15 minutes.

by using a knife or sandpaper to remove excess material and perfect its
form.

to enhance its appeal. Bát Tràng ceramic artists use fine brushes to hand-
paint designs directly onto the unglazed surface. Skilled craftsmanship is
essential, as the patterns must harmonize with the shape of the pottery,

employ various decorative techniques, such as engraving fine lines,
applying flowing glazes, and painting with colored enamels, all of which
contribute to the artistic value of the ceramics.

glaze by dipping or spraying it onto the surface. This glaze protects the
piece while adding shine and enhancing its colors. High-end ceramics are
often coated with special glazes, such as crackle glaze, jade glaze, or blue
glaze, to further enhance their artistic value.
02:02 - 02:10: The next step, a crucial process that determines the quality
of the final product, is firing the ceramics. The pieces are carefully
arranged in the kiln, powered by gas or traditional wood-fired methods.
The kiln is heated to temperatures between 1,200 and 1,300°C for about
12 to 14 hours, depending on the size of the pieces. After firing, the
ceramics are gradually cooled to prevent cracking caused by sudden
temperature changes.
