B3. Abstraction The students are going to be divided into 5 groups for Jigsaw Strategy. The
(5 minutes)
students’ first group is going to be their Expert Group and they will be given a
hand-out of their topic. The students are going to discuss among their circle
and the teacher will check on each of the groups.
After 8 minutes of discussion in their Expert Groups, a chosen student or an
Expert is asked to move to an adjacent group to discuss what they have talked
in their own Expert Groups. The process repeats until the Experts are back
within their own group.
The following are the concepts that each of the groups are going to share with
their Expert Groups.
Random Sampling
This is a method of selection in which each unit in the population has an equal
probability of being chosen. Individuals are frequently used as the unit of
analysis; however complete groups can also be used.
Non-Random Sampling
Non-random sampling is a sampling technique where the sample selection is
based on factors (convenience, experience, or judgment of the researcher)
other than just random chance. In other words, non- random sampling is
biased in nature.
The following are the Random Sampling Technique
Simple Random Sample
Every person in the population has the same chance of being chosen. The
population should be included in your sampling frame. The researcher may
use random generator to the population and pick a sample according to the
desired size.
Systematic Sampling
In this sampling technique, not everyone has an equal chance of getting
chosen. Example would be “every 5th person on a list” where the individual has
no equal chance of being picked as the sampling is based on a certain criteria.
This isn't fully random because an individual's location in the list affects their

chances of being chosen.
Stratified Sampling
Within a population, the individuals are grouped which we call a “stratum”
based on the characteristics they share. Stratified sampling aims to ensure that
each major strata of the population is represented. Because stratum
membership must be homogeneous, sampling would not allow for the selection
of an individual who belongs to two strata. The researcher could choose an
equal number of participants from each stratum or choose volunteers
proportionally based on each stratum's anticipated size.
Cluster Sampling
This sampling technique requires dividing the population into clusters and
choosing the sample randomly.
The following are the Non-Random Sampling techniques.
Convenient Sampling
This sampling technique targets the individuals that are available and are
ready to participate in the survey. Example would be volunteers who can be
contacted and are willing to participate. This is a quick and low-cost technique
to collect preliminary data, but there's no way of knowing if the sample is
typical of the population, thus the results aren't generalizable.
Purposive Sampling
This sampling technique entails the researcher using their knowledge to

choose a sample that is most useful to the research’s goals. This technique is
frequently used in qualitative research in learning a specific phenomenon
rather than making statistical references, or when the population is small and
specific. The criteria and rationale for inclusion in an effective purposive
sample must be clear.
Snowball Sampling
This type of sampling is based on practical purposes rather than research
purposes. When those individuals matching a particular set of criteria are not
readily identifiable, one way to locate participants is to ask for referrals. Once
one individual is found and surveyed, they are asked if they know others who
share similar characteristics. Thus, the selection process has a snowball
effect, the sample gets larger as you go. With this technique it can be difficult
to know when the number in the sample is sufficient. This is where data
saturation decisions need to be made.
Quota Sampling
This sampling technique involves selecting individuals to participate based on identifiable
characteristics of individuals within the population. With quota sampling, the researcher
identifies major subgroups of interest within the population (strata), determines the
number of individuals needed, and then attempts to obtain enough willing and available
participants from each subgroup.

The activity is done in 5-7 minutes and they are going to share their

facilitated by the teacher to spark a debate.
Process Questions:
1. As a researcher, why selecting and using appropriate
sampling technique is important?
2. Why it is important to establish a good sampling method
and data collection in conducting research?
3. How should we select the sampling technique to be used?
