Why Vocabulary Assignments?

“Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be
conveyed.'

If you spend most of your time studying grammar, your English will not improve very much.
You will see most improvement if you learn more words and expressions. You can say very
little with grammar, but you can say almost anything with words!

What does it mean to “know” a word?

Knowing a word means:

· having the ability to recognize it in its spoken and written forms.
· knowing its different meanings.
· knowing its part of speech (e.g. a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb)
· being able to pronounce it properly
· being able to use it correctly within a sentence in an appropriate grammatical form
· being able to recognize different types of English e.g. boot/trunk, lift/elevator
(British/American).

In order to be good at learning English words, you need to

 create a personal connection with words.
 see, hear and feel the words as much as possible.
 be actively involved in the learning of words with different tasks and
techniques.

Therefore, it is very important for you to revise the new words you have learnt in each unit
and complete your vocabulary assignments.

How Can I Contribute As a Member of a Group?

Being a member of a group can be an incredibly amazing experience and provide lots of
benefits. It’s motivating to 1. _________________(BELONG) to a group because people feel
more secure when they know that they have others around them. When we look to joining a
group, we typically ask ourselves what this group will do for us. Why should I join this group?
Will it give me what I need? What are the 2._________________ (REQUIRE) of being a

____________ (RELUCTANT) to contribute to the group.

So what can you bring to the group? First, you need to be completely there mentally. That

you do not make the physical commitment to be there, the group will not consider you a
true member of the group and there will be 8._______________ (COMPLAIN) about your
participation.

Think about what other skills you possess, whether it is in your personal life or your
professional life. You do not have to make a heroic effort. For instance, if you are
9.______________ (PERSUADE) and like thinking up new things to do, then you can run a

________________ (ARGUE) in the group. If you have good problem-solving skills, you can
help them to calm down and negotiate. Perhaps you are a great cook. You could make some
tasty appetizers for the group during the meetings, or run a wine tasting event to relax your
group members during one of the meetings.

You may not have any particularly special skills which would be 11.________________
