Investigating Iron Rusting Methods

The document explains the process of iron rusting, which occurs when iron is exposed to water and oxygen, differentiating it from general corrosion. It outlines a laboratory experiment involving iron nails and various conditions to observe rusting, along with safety precautions. Additionally, it poses questions for further research on the chemical nature of rusting, prevention methods, and comparisons with aluminum corrosion.

‭Corrosion‬ ‭is‬ ‭the‬ ‭general‬ ‭term‬ ‭used‬ ‭to‬‭describe‬‭the‬‭degradation‬‭of‬‭metal‬‭surfaces‬‭whereas‬
‭rusting‬‭is the specific type of corrosion that happens to‬‭iron‬‭.‬
‭When does the iron rust and why?‬

‭●‬ ‭3 Test tubes‬
‭●‬ ‭1 Test tube rack‬
‭●‬ ‭1 Rubber bung to fit test tube‬
‭●‬ ‭Cotton wool‬
‭●‬ ‭Forceps‬
‭●‬ ‭Pen or other means of labelling test tubes‬

‭2)‬ ‭About 1/4 fill tube 1 with distilled water and add a nail. Don't cover the whole‬
‭nail with water.‬
‭3)‬ ‭About 3/4 fill tube 2 with boiled distilled water, add a nail and cover it totally‬
‭with the water. Then carefully pour a little oil over the surface to prevent air‬
‭from reaching the water.‬
‭4)‬ ‭Put a nail into tube 3 and add about 2 cm depth of anhydrous calcium‬
‭chloride (CaCl‬‭2‭)‬ (these absorb water).‬
‭5)‬ ‭Put a bung in tube number 3 to prevent any further water from getting in.‬
‭6)‬ ‭Leave for at least seven days and then note any changes in the appearance‬
‭of the nails.‬
