My Alternative Message to My Freshman Students 11
- Andrew Robinson
➢ In a University class, much of your study has to be self-directed,
with the teacher giving guidance on what to do.
➢ You must become a self-directed learner
➢ Problem solving is the key to success.
➢ My role is to help you grow intellectually, to master the subject.
I can show you the way, but you must make
that journey!
ADJUSTING AT BUET: FEW TIPS 12
➢ You will need to change your mind-set from day one. There
won’t be any tutor!
➢ Talk to your advisor.
o Learn to handle Failure It will be your first time! Don’t get de-
motivated, Come back stronger!
− “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail
better.”
− Samuel Beckett
o Study regularly over the whole semester.
ADJUSTING AT BUET: FEW TIPS 13
o Read books, not ready-made notes. Buy as much
books as you can afford. Use the BUET Library facility.
o Study in groups if you are comfortable, it helps. However,
find the way that works best for you.
o Try to develop yourself/your personality.
o Improve your English, communication/soft skills,
leadership qualities etc.
− Extra-curricular activities help, BUT you should learn to
balance!
14
THINGS NOT TO DO AT BUET
o Listen to bad advices!
o Few examples:
o GPA does not matter!
o You don’t need to study the whole semester!
o Studying during the PL is enough!
o Easy subject, you need only couple of days to get an A+
o ……..
o Focus too much on earning easy money!
o Forget why you are here!
o Find scapegoats to blame for your failure!

DEFINITION OF ENGINEERING
o The profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and
natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice is
applied with judgment to develop ways to use economically the
materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.
“The scientist seeks to understand what is; the engineer
seeks to create what never was”
--Von Kármán

o Mechanical Engineering: The branch of engineering that involves the production and
usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation
of machines and tools. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines. [Wikipedia]
