ABSTRACT

Medicinal plants have long been an essential component of human healthcare,

contributing to the treatment of numerous diseases. However, rapid
environmental changes, habitat destruction, and over-harvesting have placed
many medicinal plant species at risk. Traditional methods of plant
identification rely on expert knowledge and are time-consuming, making large-
scale identification and conservation efforts difficult to implement. As a result,
the need for automated and efficient plant identification systems has
increased. Leveraging advanced technologies in computer vision and machine
learning, researchers have developed solutions for the automatic classification
of plants. By extracting and analysing key morphological features such as leaf
shape, color, texture, and vein patterns, machine learning models can identify
plants with high accuracy. Techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks
(CNN), known for their ability to process image data, and Support Vector
Machines (SVM), effective in classification tasks, have proven particularly
effective in this domain. CNNs are employed for deep feature extraction from
plant images, enabling the model to learn complex patterns and subtle
differences between species. Meanwhile, SVMs are used for robust
classification, ensuring that medicinal plants are correctly identified based on
the extracted features. The combination of these machine learning techniques
significantly improves the accuracy, speed, and scalability of plant
identification compared to traditional methods. This automated approach to
identifying medicinal plants is crucial for biodiversity conservation and
environmental sustainability. By facilitating rapid identification, it aids in the
preservation of endangered species and promotes the study and sustainable
use of valuable plant resources. The integration of such technologies supports
the development of comprehensive plant databases, contributing to future
research in botany and pharmacology.
