INTRODUCTION

A solar water heater is a device which uses the energy of direct sunlight to heat, cook or
pasteurize drink and other food materials. Many solar water heater currently in use are relatively
inexpensive, low-tech devices, although some are as powerful or as expensive as traditional
stoves, and advanced, large scale solar water heater can boil water and cook food for hundreds
of people. Because they use no fuel and cost nothing to operate, many nonprofit organizations
are promoting their use worldwide in order to help reduce fuel costs and air pollution, and to
help slow down deforestation and desertification.

Solar water heater is one of the simplest utensils used to boil and cook food. It's safe as well
since it does not use fire and is environment-friendly as it does not consume any fuel. It
harnesses the power of the sun to cook boil and food. It is usually designed in the form of a
simple box in which you place your food. The box is lined with some kind of reflective metal and
covered with glass. It then uses the energy of the sun to warm as per the temperature that you
want your food to be cooked in. The food gets completely cooked. Solar cookers are thus
inexpensive, eco-friendly, and easily used.

ABSTRACT

● Mankind will continue to use energy, even if we all make a concerted effort to cut down on our
consumption.

alternative
ways to produce and use sustainable, clean energy.
● The main purpose of this project is to replace old wood fuels with an eco-friendly solar water
heater and cooker that uses “green energy”.

OBJECTIVE
● To cook food in the process of using solar energy instead of electricity or fuels.
● To find an alternative way to cook without using fuel.
● To conceive an innovative idea to save resources.

ADVANTAGES

● To conserve the usage of fuel.

● To save our costs by purchasing low cost of products instead of high cost of fuel.
● Preventing air pollution.
● Preventing global warming.
● There is no danger of burning food and flavors remain intact.

DISCUSSION

Concentrating Sunlight:
A mirror surface with high specular reflection is used to concentrate and channelize light from
the sun into a small cooking space. The sunlight can be concentrated by several orders of
magnitude, producing magnitudes high enough to melt salt and metal. For household solar
cooking applications, such high temperatures are not required. Solar cookers available in the
market are designed to achieve temperatures of 650C to 4000C.

Converting Light Energy to Heat Energy:

The concentrated sunlight is focused onto a receiver such as a cooking pan. The interaction
between the light energy and the receiver material helps to convert light into heat by a process
called conduction. The conversion is maximized by making use of materials that conduct and
retain heat. Pipe should be matte black in colour to maximize absorption.

Trapping Heat Energy:

The occurrence of convection is reduced by isolating the air inside the cooker from the air
outside. Using a glass lid on the pot enhances light absorption from the top of the pan and
decreases the convection energy loss along with improving the heat holding capacity of the
cooker. The glazing taps the incoming sunlight but is opaque for escaping infrared thermal rays.

on the local environment, and potential for dam failure. Additionally, the report discusses micro
hydro systems and their potential to improve the livelihood of farmers by providing cheap and
reliable energy for irrigation and other forms of agriculture. Overall, the report highlights the
potential of hydroelectricity as a reliable, clean, and renewable energy source that can play a
significant role in meeting the energy demands and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in rural
areas, but also the importance of considering the environmental and social impacts of
hydroelectric projects before building them.

INTRODUCTION TO HYDROELECTRICITY

Hydroelectricity is a form of energy that is generated by harnessing the power of moving water.
It is considered to be one of the most widely used forms of renewable energy, and is often used
as a way to generate electricity in areas that are not connected to the main power grid.
Hydroelectric power is generated by building a dam across a river or a waterfall, and then using
the falling water to turn a turbine, which generates electricity. The electricity is then sent to a
generator, where it is converted into usable power.

There are many advantages to hydroelectric power. One of the main advantages is that it is a
clean and renewable source of energy, as it does not produce any greenhouse gas emissions or
other pollutants. Hydroelectric power is also relatively inexpensive to generate, once the initial
construction costs have been paid off. Additionally, hydroelectric power plants are reliable and
can operate continuously, unlike other renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power,
which are dependent on weather conditions.

However, hydroelectric power also has some disadvantages. Dams can displace people who
live near them, and can also have a negative impact on the local environment. Additionally,
dams can fail and cause flooding, which can be devastating to the communities that live nearby.

Overall, Hydroelectricity is a reliable, clean and renewable energy source that can play a
significant role in meeting energy demand and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But it's
important to consider the environmental and social impacts of hydroelectric projects before
building [Link] is a form of energy that is generated by harnessing the power of
moving water. In rural areas, small-scale hydroelectric power plants can be built to provide
electricity to villages that are not connected to the main power grid.

HISTORY OF HYDROELECTRICITY
In the modern days, it was only in 1882 that the first hydropower plant was built in Wisconsin,
USA. This plant made use of a fast flowing river as its source. Some years later, dams were
constructed to create artificial water storage area at the most convenient locations. These dams
also controlled the water flow rate
to the power station turbines. In Nepal, the first hydropower plant was established at Pharping
(500-KW) in 1911, 29 years after the world's first plant was established, during Prime Minister
Chandra Shamsher Rana's time to meet the energy requirements of the members of the ruling
class. Though some 60 percent of Nepal's population remains deprived of electricity while the
capital city continues to thirst for drinking water and suffers from regular load-shedding even at
the present, it is fascinating to note that Nepal had such an early start in the hydropower
generation. The first hydropower plant in India was established in 1898 in Darjeeling and the
first hydropower plant in China was established in 1912. Originally, hydropower stations were of
a small size set up at waterfalls in the vicinity of towns because it was not possible at that time
to transmit electrical energy over long distances. The main reason why there has been
large-scale use of hydropower is because it can now be transmitted inexpensively over
hundreds of kms. where it is required, making hydropower economically viable. Transmission
over long distances is carried out by means of high voltage, overhead power lines called
transmission lines.

BENEFITS OF HYDROELECTRICITY IN VILLAGES

● Reliability: Hydroelectric power plants can operate continuously, unlike other renewable
energy
sources such as solar and wind power, which are dependent on weather conditions.
● Low cost: Once the initial construction costs are paid off, the operating costs of
hydroelectric power plants are relatively low.
● Environmentally friendly: Hydroelectric power generation does not produce any
greenhouse gas emissions or other pollutants.
● Job creation: Construction and maintenance of hydroelectric power plants can create
jobs in rural areas.
● Improved quality of life: Access to electricity can improve living standards in rural areas by
powering lights, appliances, and other devices that improve daily life.

However, hydroelectric power also has some drawbacks, such as the displacement of people
who live near the dam, impact to the local environment, and the potential for dam failure. It's
also worth noting that micro hydro systems can be used for irrigation and other forms of
agriculture and can help to improve the livelihood of farmers in the area, by providing them with
cheap, reliable.
MAJOR CHALLENGES SEEN WHILE PRODUCING HYDROELECTRICITY

● Climate change and vulnerability

Nepal is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, water-induced disasters and
hydrometeorological extreme events such as droughts, storms, floods, inundation, landslides,
debris flow, soil erosion, and avalanches . According to previous report, 22 districts are highly
vulnerable in terms of landslide-prone areas, 12 districts to GLOF, and 9 for flooding. National
communication report 2015 described an increasing trend of climate change from the energy
sector.

● Disagreements and risks on a local scale

It is vital that key stakeholders, including the community living in the region where the hydro
project will be implemented, work together. It is clear that the local community expects a fair
share of the benefits that will accrue from the project development process. Water disputes may
arise as a result of upstream hydropower and downstream irrigation. Local people’s demand
may cause tensions over the right to energy resources, raising the cost of hydropower
generation due to the stretching of time.

● The risk of payment

Considering the lack of credit ratings (no credit histories, bad oversight, and strong
technological leaders) of state-owned power stations, developers in several developing nations
request a counter assurance to support the financial risk. The government is apparently
mandated to ensure that the utility (energy buyer) pays its debts to the developers on time, and
if it does not, the government instantly makes payment to reduce the power company
irresponsibility. The way to minimize this risk is for the utility to establish a line of credit with the
Independent Power Producers (IPP).

MEASURES TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES

One way to overcome the problems in rural areas is by using hydroelectricity as a source of
renewable energy. This can provide a stable and reliable source of power to communities that
may not have access to traditional forms of electricity. Hydroelectricity can be generated through
the use of dams and water turbines, which harness the power of flowing water to generate
electricity. This can be a cost-effective and sustainable solution for rural areas, as it does not
rely on fossil fuels and has a low environmental impact.

Another way that hydroelectricity can help overcome problems in rural areas is by providing a
source of income for communities. Hydroelectric power plants can generate revenue for local
residents through the sale of electricity to the grid or through the sale of carbon credits. This can
help to boost the local economy and provide jobs in the community. Additionally, hydroelectricity
can also be used to power irrigation systems, which can help to improve agriculture in rural
areas. This can lead to increased food security and improved living standards for residents.

DISCUSSION
Hydroelectricity is a significant source of renewable energy that offers many advantages, such
as being a low-carbon, stable and renewable source of energy. However, its implementation
also has some significant drawbacks, including high initial investment, environmental impacts,
disruption of local communities, and limited availability in certain regions. Overall, the results
show that while hydroelectricity can play a crucial role in reducing our dependence on fossil
fuels, it is important to carefully consider the potential impacts and find ways to minimize them
while maximizing the benefits of this source of energy. This could be achieved by prioritizing
small-scale hydro projects, improving project planning and management, and engaging with
local communities to address their concerns and needs.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the use of hydroelectricity as a source of energy in rural areas can have a
significant impact in overcoming the problems faced by these communities. By providing a
stable and reliable source of power, hydroelectricity can improve the lives of residents by
increasing access to electricity and boosting the local economy. Additionally, the use of
hydroelectricity can also lead to a reduction in the reliance on fossil fuels and a decrease in the
environmental impact of energy production. Overall, hydroelectricity is a cost-effective,
sustainable and beneficial solution for rural areas that can improve the quality of life for
residents and contribute to the development of the community.
