Cultural Expressions in Japan: Hanami

Every country has special traditions and cultural expressions. In Japan, one
important tradition is Hanami.

Hanami means “flower viewing” in Japanese. It is a festival to celebrate the beauty of


cherry blossoms (sakura) in spring. The tradition started over 1,000 years ago when
people in Japan admired the flowers as a symbol of new beginnings.

During Hanami, people go to parks and gardens with family and friends. They Sit
under cherry trees, eat food, and enjoy nature. Many people bring bento boxes
(lunch boxes with rice, fish, and vegetables) and drink green tea. Atnight, some
parks have lanterns, and people enjoy the view of the cherry blossoms under the
lights.

Hanami is a cultural expression because it shows the Japanese appreciation for


nature, beauty, and life. It is a time for people to relax and spend time together .
