Mid-Ocean Ridge
What is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a type of plate boundary that creates
new ocean floor with the help of magma, This magma rises to the
surface and gets cooled down by the water in the ocean. This
cooled down magma then gets pushed outwards creating new
ocean floor. The reason why we have an endless supply of
magma is because it gets recycled via subduction where the
ocean floor moves downwards from the lithosphere to the
asthenosphere where it gets remelted to create more ocean floor
and this happens over and over again
Who discovered the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
During the latter half of the 20th century, When the invention
of SONAR, Marine Gravity and Marine Magnetic could unveil
the depths of the ocean in unprecedented detail , There was
a particular woman with a great mind for geology. She was
a researcher at Columbia University. One day with a fellow
researcher, She started her first expedition to map out the
ocean floor with the recent SONAR technology where she
found the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
