I. Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Science Education holds a significance in national development as it serve as a
foundation for progress by preparing individuals with critical thinking, problem-solving,
and analytical skills to understand the complexities of today's environment and support
advancement in many different kinds of fields, including health, technology, and
economic growth. The Philippines has acknowledged and prioritize the need for a
strong science education system, as seen by its inclusion in the national curriculum at
all educational levels from primary to tertiary.
Over the years, Philippine government has continuously adopted improvements and
initiatives through the development of policies and programa that aim at improving
scientific literacy and preparing students for future careers in science, technology, and
mathematics-related fields. Together with these efforts, the Philippines’ science
education system still faces challenges. According to Programme dor International
Student Assessment (PISA) many Filipino students finds it difficult to achieve even a
minimum level of proficiency (Level 2 or above). Compared to the OECD average of
76%, just 23% of Filipino students achieved at least Level 2 competency in science.
Implying that a basic lack of knowledge of scientific concept and skills exists. These
findings shows the need for a more thorough understanding of the factors and issues
hindering the nation's successful delivery of science education.
Several factors contribute to the low performance of Filipino students in science.
However, a particular issue that demands immediate attention is the limited availability
of laboratory facilities and learning equipment in many schools in the Philippines. This
shortage affects students capacity to engage in hands-on learning experiences,
participate experimential learning, and develop a deeper understanding of scientific
concept. This limits the effectiveness of teaching science and affects the students,
teachers, and the country as a whole. This review contributes to the existing knowledge
through identifying gaps in our understanding and the presentation of findings to
address the situation, supporting a stronger and more equitable science education
system in the Philippines.
