REVISION: B 0333.141311.20

Extractor Blocked Outlet Scenario:

13. The required relieving rate was taken as 74.1 gpm of subcooled liquid entering the PSV and flashing at the PSV throat.
a. Calculation based on flow through control valve LV-1534 and bypass. Combined Cv assumed to be 12.0 (per client).
b. The required relief rate was calculated assuming negligible friction losses in piping and downstream equipment
between the source pressure and the PSV.
c. The source pressure was taken as 198.4 psig, which was calculated assuming 180 psig normal operating pressure in
the Treater Extractor and an elevation head of 75.5’ between the control valve and the extractor pressure transmitter.
d. The downstream pressure was taken as 176.9 psig, which was calculated from the PSV set pressure + 10%
overpressure and 49’ elevation head between the pump and the PSV.
14. Relief device orifice sizing calculations for blocked outlet performed based on the method outlined in API 520 8th Ed. Section
C.2.3. This method assumes a subcooled or saturated liquid entering the relief valve and flashing. No condensable vapor or non-
condensable gas enters the relief valve.
15. Two-phase flow pressure drop calculations were performed using the “Beggs-Brill-Moody” method in Pro/II.
16. Physical property data for relieving fluid was taken from Pro/II, with composition the same as the inlet stream to the C4 Treater
Extractor (Stream 102 on PFD):

h. Liquid density = 35.1 lb/ft3

i. Liquid viscosity = 0.15 cP
Fire Scenario:
18. The following Caustic physical properties were calculated using PRO II at 10% vaporization point and the relieving pressure:
a. Molecular Weight = 19.66.
b. Compressibility = 1.
c. Latent Heat = 859.4 BTU/lb.
d. Relieving Temperature = 387.6 °F.
e. Viscosity = 0.016 cP.
f. k = 1.372.
19. No additional surface area was included for piping.
20. Heat absorption calculations are based on the assumption that there is inadequate firefighting and drainage.
21. There is no insulation on the Caustic Heater.
22. The environmental factor, F=1.
23. Latent heat was calculated based on vaporizing 10% by mass of the normal liquid (caustic solution, stream 181 in the mass
balance) composition. Also, the vapor relieving stream is based on the 10% vaporization point.
24. The vessel length is 24.33 feet. This accounts for two 4 inch pipes 12 ft 2inches long.

13. Determining Scenario

1. Determining - Wash oil control valve failure. Required orifice area = 0.234 in2 (see Attachment 3 for calculations).
2. Other - Extractor blocked outlet. Required orifice area = 0.209 in2 (see Attachment 4 for calculations).
3. Other – Fire. Required area = 0.055 in2 (see Attachment 10 for calculations).

14. Orifice Determination

The calculated required orifice size is 0.234 in2 for the wash oil control valve failure case. A balance bellows relief valve with an “F” orifice
(0.307 in2) was selected.

15. Piping Considerations – Inlet

See Attachment 12 for PSV piping isometric. The PSV inlet piping is currently 1-½”, but will need to be increased to 2” diameter.

Based on the control valve failure rated relief rate (40,615.9 lb/hr liquid), the inlet pressure drop is 2.79 psi, which is 1.86% of the set
pressure. This is less than the 3% of set pressure allowed for inlet piping, and thus is acceptable for the fire scenario (see Attachments 5
and 6 for inlet pipe pressure drop calculations for control valve failure scenario).

REVISION: B 0333.141311.20

Based on the blocked outlet scenario rated relief rate (30,595 lb/hr subcooled liquid), the inlet pressure drop is 1.5 psi, which is 1.0% of the
set pressure. This is less than the 3% of set pressure allowed for inlet piping, and thus is acceptable for both the fire and blocked outlet
scenarios (see Attachment 10 for discharge pipe pressure drop calculations for blocked outlet scenario).
16. Piping Considerations – Outlet
See Attachment 12 for PSV piping isometric. The PSV discharge piping is currently 2”, but will need to be increased to 3” diameter.

Based on the control valve failure rated relief rate (40,615.9 lb/hr liquid), the outlet pressure drop is 1.0 psi, which gives a total back
pressure of 3.0 psig. This is 2.0% of the set pressure, which is less than 50% of the set pressure. The discharge piping is therefore
acceptable for the fire scenario (see Attachments 7 and 8 for discharge pipe pressure drop calculations for control valve failure scenario).

Based on the blocked outlet scenario rated relief rate (30,595 lb/hr liquid/vapor two-phase), the outlet pressure drop is 20.8 psi, which
gives a total back pressure of 22.8 psig. This is 15.2% of the set pressure, which is less than 50% of the set pressure. The discharge
piping is therefore acceptable for both fire and blocked outlet scenarios (see Attachment 10 for discharge pipe pressure drop calculations
for blocked outlet scenario).
17. Conclusion
PSV-0550 is required to protect the Scrubbing Oxidizer and the Caustic Heater from overpressure in the event that there is control valve
failure, fire or blocked outlet on the extractor. A balanced bellows valve with an “F” size orifice (0.307 in2) is selected. The inlet and outlet
piping pressure drops are acceptable with the inlet line size increased to 2” diameter and the outlet line size increased to 3” diameter.
