Multimedia Systems Overview

The document outlines the foundations of multimedia systems, focusing on the five primary types of multimedia data: text, images, audio, video, and graphics. It details the attributes of text in Natural Language Processing, including syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse, as well as the characteristics of video such as frame rate, frame size, and aspect ratio. The content emphasizes the importance of understanding digital representation formats and storage requirements for different multimedia types.

2ND SEMESTER, AY 2024-2025

Module 1
FOUNDATIONS:
Introduction to Multimedia
Systems
Part 2
Lesson Objectives
Identify and classify the five primary types of multimedia data
(text, images, audio, video, and graphics)
Explain the fundamental characteristics and properties of each
multimedia data type

Compare and contrast different digital representation formats

for each media type

Analyze the storage requirements and processing implications

for different multimedia formats

Texts
Text in Natural Language Processing

Text
any piece of written human language that a
computer program can analyze and interpret.

any sequence of words or sentences used to

convey information, which is then broken down
into smaller units like words or phrases to be
processed by the NLP system.
Attributes of Text (Natural Language Processing)

Syntax
Syntax pertains to the arrangement of words and
phrases to create well-structured sentences in a
language

Semantics
Semantics is concerned with understanding the
meaning of words and how they create meaning
when combined in sentences.
Attributes of Text (Natural Language Processing)
Pragmatics
Pragmatics deals with understanding language in various
contexts, ensuring that the intended meaning is derived
based on the situation, speaker’s intent, and shared
knowledge.
Discourse
Discourse focuses on the analysis and interpretation of
language beyond the sentence level, considering how
sentences relate to each other in texts and conversations.
The bat hit the ball.
Video
Video

A video refers to a form of recording, or

broadcasting of moving visual images with an
audio component.

Digital video combines features of graphics and

audio to create dynamic content for multimedia
products.
Attributes of a Video

Frame rate
Frame rate is the measurement of how quickly a
number of frames appears within a second,
which is why it's also called FPS (frames per
second).
the number of images displayed or captured per
second
Attributes of a Video

Frame Size
The amount of information in each video frame
is typically referred to as its frame size (but it
can also be described as the image resolution).
It refers to the pixel dimension of the video
signal. This is the greatest factor in the image
quality of the video.
Attributes of a Video

Attributes of a Video
Aspect Ratio
The term aspect ratio is used to describe the
ratio of width to height of an image or clip.

When discussing video, you’ll often see aspect

ratio specified in one of two ways: using whole
numbers like 16 x 9 or in a decimal ratio such as
1.78:1.
