1. Purpose
Conducting radiography operation with adequate safety precaution.
2. Reference Standards
IAEA Safety standard to conduct industrial radiography.
3. Associated Hazards
Continuous exposure / overdoses of radiation may be leading to cancer and other skin
diseases.
4. Scope
Applicable to all ECIL project sites, Central EPC functions and supporting functions.
5. Performance Criteria
Complying the radiation safety criteria along and necessary safety precaution with respect
to site condition.
6. Competency Requirement
Certified radiography personnel.
7. Statutory Test Requirement
Film badges & dosimeter available with radiographer.
Survey meter with test certificate.

9. Procedure
9.1 Radiography at work site:
9.1.1 Communication shall be made in advance to all concerned HODs of the agencies
working in the vicinity, about schedule of radiography work to be earned out
indicating exact locations.
9.1.2 Area shall be cordoned off / barricaded to restrict unauthorized entry in the danger
zone.
9.1.3 Radiation warning symbols shall be conspicuously posted along the cordon.
9.1.4 Blinking light & hooter shall be kept in "ON" mode during the process of
radiography to warn others.
9.1.5 Ensure that all unauthorized/ unexpected entries are restricted.
9.1.6 Tool box talk (safety talks) shall be conducted to all persons and the records for the
same shall be maintained
9.1.7 Use of appropriate source of radiation shall be ensured.
9.1.8 Entire work shall be carried out by approved - qualified operator / Radiographer.
9.1.9 Radiographer shall wear dosimeter badges when operating the source.

9.1.10 The radiation levels along the cordon shall be monitored by a suitable and
calibrated radiation survey meter, so as to confirm that the cordon distance is
indeed adequate.
9.1.11 When the source is exposed it is advisable:
To stand behind the buildings, steel or other shielding materials.
To stand away from the source of radiation.
To limit the exposure time for particular.
9.1.12 When the radiography work is carried out at night time, the radiography site up to
the boundary of the cordoning shall be adequately illuminated throughout the
duration of radiography work. Blinking lights shall be conspicuously displayed
during night along the cordon and especially at the point of entry.
9.1.13 Avoid radiography in day time. In case of day time or at critical locations follow the
protocol with additional precautions to restrict persons working in the vicinity.
9.1.14 The radiography work shall be carried out only under the supervision and guidance
of radiography-in charge
9.1.15 After termination of each exposure, it shall be verified by means of radiation survey
meter in proper working condition that the source has indeed returned to its safe
position inside the camera.
9.2 Guidelines for Handling, Storage & Transportation
9.2.1 The source shall be stored in a locked, seared lead box and shall be placed in a
locked storage room/pit and the Radiation Hazard Sign shall be displayed.
9.2.2 Strength of the camera (Decay Chart) shall be maintained and the leakage shall be
checked by the radiation meter.
9.2.3 The source storage shall be conspicuously posted with appropriate warning signs
along with radiation symbols.
9.2.4 The operator of the radiographic equipment shall maintain a log book to record the
details of day to day use of the equipment.
9.2.5 Sources shall be transported in a separate vehicle and never in a passenger vehicle.
The source shall never be left in unattended vehicles or taken home.
9.2.6 A copy of the permit and a shipping form shall be in plain view on the dash or on
the seat near the driver when transporting the source.

9.3 Testing, Operation & Maintenance
9.3.1 Sources shall be leak tested by a professional service at least every other year, or as
per BARC Regulations. Test results shall be maintained on file where the source is
stored.
9.3.2 If leaks or contamination are detected, check that the carry shield is properly in
place. If the contamination / leak source cannot be determined, the source must be
removed from service and repaired by qualified BARC approved repair service
before it is used again.
9.3.3 Sources are locked by BARC and these are not to be tampered with refilling and
disposal of sources are to be done by BARC only.
9.3.4 Maintained records shall include
• Application for requisition/ refilling of source
• Authorization for Sanction from BARC
• Certificate for Authorization for competent Radiographers
• Badges being sent to BARC monthly for exposure monitoring
9.4 Incident Reporting
9.4.1 Incidents involving potential radiation contamination and/ or leaks shall be
reported to the BARC as soon as possible.
