General Science Study Module: Light
This printable module is designed to help you understand the key concepts about light for
General Science. It starts from the most basic concepts and progresses to more complex
ideas. Each section includes key points to help you study.
1. What is Light?
- Light is a form of energy.
- It travels in waves and can move through space (vacuum).
- The speed of light is around 300,000 kilometers per second.
Key Point: Light is energy that allows us to see.
2. Sources of Light
- Natural sources: Sun, stars, fireflies.
- Artificial sources: Light bulbs, flashlights, LED lights.
Key Point: We get light from both natural and man-made sources.
3. Behavior of Light
- Light travels in a straight line.
- It can be reflected (bounces back), refracted (bends), or absorbed (taken in by materials).
- It produces shadows when blocked.
Key Point: Light behaves differently depending on what it hits.
4. Types of Materials
- Transparent: lets all light through (e.g., glass).
- Translucent: lets some light through (e.g., frosted glass).
- Opaque: blocks light completely (e.g., wood).
Key Point: Not all objects let light pass through.
5. The Colors of Light
- White light is made of many colors (ROYGBIV).
- When passed through a prism, white light splits into a rainbow.
- Red has the longest wavelength; violet has the shortest.
Key Point: Light looks white, but it's made of many colors.
6. Electromagnetic Spectrum
- The full range of electromagnetic waves includes:
Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible light, Ultraviolet, X-rays, Gamma rays.
- Visible light is the only part we can see.
Key Point: Light is part of a bigger family of energy waves.
7. Wavelength and Frequency
- Wavelength: the distance between wave peaks.
- Frequency: how many waves pass in a second.
- Shorter wavelength = higher frequency and energy (like violet).
- Longer wavelength = lower frequency and energy (like red).
Key Point: Wavelength and frequency affect the color and energy of light.
