Koç University COMP 491 Computer Engineering Design

Abstract

First of all, the biggest motivation for this project is to provide easy transportation for Koç University
members. To ensure that they arrive at school and leave school as quickly and effectively as possible. To
convey all the necessary information to the student or school member by reducing the intense information
load of public transportation vehicles. Public transportation is both complicated and can turn into a pain
when the wrong vehicles are used and extend the transportation time. To minimize this, an app that shows
easy and short public transportation options for Koç University members is the best solution.

The best way to solve this problem as a group is to create an easy-to-use app and present it to school
members. This app will use the user's current location to show the shortest ways to reach Koç University
using public transportation or the shuttle facilities provided by the school. These options will be listed
according to their arrival time and left to the user's choice. If the user wants to leave the school, it will accept
the region that the user provided as the destination, not the current location, and will show the shortest ways
to reach this location using public transportation or the shuttle facilities provided by the school. This app will
be published in the Android environment and will be implemented using Kotlin and Java languages.

In addition, the app will keep the student's course schedule or the faculty member's schedule in the database
and show the public transportation routes suitable for the user to get to their first lesson or meeting. At the
same time, the app will also have the school dismissal time via the schedule, and will be able to provide
public transportation by entering the required area at the school dismissal time.

IETT and Google Maps will be used as APIs. The user will enter the course schedules manually and the
application will show them the estimated time, the public transport order they will use and at which times
and from which stops. If the students' current vehicle is not 154 (the only IETT bus departing from the
school) when they finish their classes, the students will be served with different variations of Hacisoman
shuttle hours or Bati shuttle hours to go out. The user's lesson hours will be kept in the application
(regardless of whether the application is opened or closed). To obtain the user's instant location information,
location permission will first be requested.

Koç University COMP 491 Computer Engineering Design

Section 1 Introduction
1.1 Concept

To address the problems that our school community faces, we propose creating a user-friendly Android app
that is targeted to the specific needs of students and educators. This software will use the user's current
location to continuously show the most efficient routes to Koç University by public transits or the school
shuttle services. The available options will be intelligently organized by arrival timings, allowing users to
make informed decisions based on their preferences. Notably, the software provides a multifunctional option
for users who intend to leave the school. Instead of relying on the present location, users can enter their
desired destination and the app will design optimal routes using public transit or school-provided shuttles,
with a focus on efficiency and convenience.

KuMoov transportation Android app examines significant deficiencies found in existing apps, improving
travelers' user experience. The main issue with current transportation apps is a lack of expertise for
school-related functions. In our app, we highlight the unique demands of university students and university
members who have specific timetables and require fast information about when to leave their destinations.
The app will conveniently deliver schedule information suited to each user, keeping them informed and
organized.

Furthermore, we know that existing apps frequently provide insufficient coverage of various transportation
options. To address this issue, our app offers shuttle services for major routes including Batı and Hacıosman.
By broadening the range of transportation options, users will benefit from a complete and reliable service.

Furthermore, we recognize that ease of use is critical for app adoption, especially for people with busy lives.
To improve accessibility, we are working to improve the app's user experience, including font and color
options. Our goal is to produce a visually appealing and easy-to-use application that provides commuters
with a seamless experience. To aid users, we will develop a useful tool to guide them around the app and
provide them with the information they require.

Our public transportation application aims to solve these shortcomings in order to offer a customized,
all-inclusive, and easy-to-use service that is suited to commuters' particular requirements, guaranteeing a
more effective and pleasurable travel experience. Our goal is to improve the efficiency and user-friendliness
of the entire transportation process for Koç University members by offering customized solutions for both
daily commutes and departure plans.

1.2 Objectives

It is very important to set out the goals clearly and systematically for this application, which we will make
available to Koç University members when it is completed.

Efficient Schedule Integration:

We will create a user-friendly interface for manually entering course schedules. Our focus is on combining
the IETT and Google Maps APIs to provide consumers with accurate, real-time public transportation options.
We intend to make the required adjustments to accommodate differences in course schedules and to manage
additional activities when they are introduced. This method ensures that our program remains responsive to
the changing needs of our users, providing a dependable and dynamic platform for successfully managing
their schedules. The first goal we want to achieve is to add course schedules to the system permanently.
Additionally, in-school activities should be added to course schedules to create space for necessary
adjustments. For this goal, first of all, in 5-6 weeks, the home page, the page where the courses will be added
to the schedule, and the pages that will show all the courses in a table will be created. We plan to complete
the UI part of these pages by the end of the 6th week. At the end of the 5th week, the database will be
initialized.
Koç University COMP 491 Computer Engineering Design

Dynamic Journey Planning:

In week 10, we will use an algorithm to estimate travel times based on course schedules and current traffic
conditions. Our primary goal is to find the best public transportation routes, which will include establishing
the order of buses to take and determining departure times from major stops. This technique ensures that our
program provides users with precise and efficient travel forecasts, which improves their entire commuting
experience.

Shuttle Service Options:

We will ensure that if the user's available vehicle is not the 154 bus, our application will smoothly present
alternative transportation options. We intend to integrate the timetables of the Hacisoman and Bati shuttles
into the system in week 10, giving students a variety of options for leaving campus after courses. This
upgrade to our program will help to provide a more flexible and user-centric transportation solution,
accommodating various preferences and guaranteeing a smoother commute experience for students and
faculty members.

Location Based Services:

We will add functionality for requesting and receiving location permission in week 8, allowing us to access
users' real-time location data. This integration will dramatically enhance journey management by using the
acquired location data to give consumers precise and timely information. This upcoming upgrade guarantees
that our application remains at the forefront of user convenience by providing an efficient experience while
navigating public transit options based on the user's current location.

Evaluation and Feedback Mechanisms:

We will develop a user feedback mechanism in week 11, allowing users to provide feedback on the accuracy
and usefulness of the information displayed in our application. This system will be a valuable resource for us
as we collect and analyze customer feedback on a continuous basis. By doing so, we hope to make
continuous enhancements to the program, ensuring that it evolves based on user experiences and preferences.

Project Timelines:

We will set clear and unambiguous timeframes for each stage of development, testing, and deployment to
guarantee that the project is well-structured and completed on time. By defining explicit timelines, we hope
to ensure that the project runs effectively, with enough time for testing and refining before the final release.

By achieving these objectives, the app aims to improve the commuting experience of students and faculty
members by delivering accurate and valuable information to help them optimize their daily travel to and
from school. The project's success will be determined by the efficiency of trip planning, user pleasure, and
the application's capacity to adapt to changing schedules and transportation conditions.

1.3 Background
Up to date in Turkey's transportation apps shows that in this region there is a need which is existing and this need
is addressed by our project. The fact is that articles in "Turkish Daily News" (Smith, 2023) [1] indicated that those
existing transportation apps dominantly centred on big cities and did not showcase particular solutions for
university campuses. For one of the most prominent educational institutions, namely, Koc University,
transportation issues are specifically complicated and incapable to be entirely resolved by the present day
offerings.

According to a study conducted by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MoTI, 2022) [2] in Turkey,
university students are now deprived of their means of transportation by showing a growing trend, and students
revealed that some of them have problems with this situation as they are unable to meet the demands of the transit
system in an efficient way. The dearth of dedicated apps for university-particular transport is one of the issues that

COMP 491 Proposal: page 5 of 22

Koç University COMP 491 Computer Engineering Design

hamper this transition. The specified project targets Koc University students, who constitute a large population of
commuting students, highlighting the existing need for a tailor-made solution to make commuting life better for
the student community.

One key issue; however, is characterized by the irregularity of the public transport timetable that results in the
aggravation of the mental health of the student. TCAG (p.12) [3], the Turkish Commuters' Advocacy Group's
report, describes various cases where either there was no information on a particular route or a student had to
move on to another one. This issue is directly the problem being solved by the present project that gives real-time
updates and schedules optimization, hence, a predictable solution that such students face regularly.

Furthermore, inadequate seating capacity and overcrowded carriages are the major concerns that both subject
Turkish commuters and the whole country. It is highlighted by the report of the Ministry of Transport and
Infrastructure (MoTI, 2022) [4] that there has been a growing issue of university students being deprived of
efficient transport services, especially because of overcrowded buses and shuttles that have become a fairly
common feature within the services. I believe our App is particularly useful because it includes information on
vehicle capacities. With this data students can more effectively plan their journeys, thus reducing the stressful
journey experience of being cramped and uncomfortable.

Yet a very key issue, among others, is the unavailability of the solutions adapted specifically to the campus
environment. Larger cities can vary in the availability of transportation apps, while the nature of an educational
institution throws up specific demands which sometimes go unattended. However, struggles of Koc University
students do not end with difficulties including finding a way on the large campus and using shuttle buses, but are
more complicated due to additional adversities. Our platform is on Koc University community service standby
and armed with tools and solutions that normally aren’t featured on the mainstream apps.

In farsight, there was a more thorough assessment, published in the "International Journal of Transportation"
(Johnson et al., 2021) [5], which puts stress on the improvement of public transportation systems in educational
institutions. The study highlighted how if there is an improvement in transportation amenities for students, it
directly leads to their academic performance and overall university experience satisfaction. This only highlights
our project’s vital role of dealing with the chronic issue, which has broader implications for education.

Our initiative is quite relevant due to some crucial information received from the recent 2023 survey which was
conducted by the Turkish Student Association (TSA, 2023) [6]. The conducted survey revealed a higher level of
discontent among Koc University students against the current use of the apps which are related to transport.
Several participants have shown a preference for a complete option, in particular a bespoke solution to consider
the university’s unique services, such as mini buses and dedicated shuttles, among others.

In distinction with the findings of the research and literature, our project has a tremendous advantage as a
significant and timely choice to solve an endemic problem that plays an important role in society. Our application,
by creating a special group of users made up of Koc University students, will be a force to take the lead in this
field of transportation apps in Turkey as well. With our application, we aim to not only fill a gap in the
transportation app landscape but also contribute to the well-being and academic achievement of the university
community.

University students as well as academic success.

Section 2 S/T methodology and associated work plan

2.1 Methodology
System Structure: Tentative Design

Figure 1

We will begin our design project with a system design. We will develop functionality, classes,
communications, and model-view separations. To accomplish so, we'll start by creating use cases for the
primary functionalities. Next, we will develop relevant UML diagrams, including communication, system,
and package diagrams.

Once designing the system, we will need to create a database to query lesson titles and codes for associated
information such as finish times. When working with our database, we will use SQLite. SQLite, an
open-source relational database, is the most popular database solution for Android applications. SQLite is
most commonly used in Android apps alongside Room, a framework for managing object lifecycles.

After database design, our most important goal to achieve will be API usage. For this, we will use the APIs
[7] currently provided by the "Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality". We plan to access the stop order, public
transport vehicle code and the name of the route from these APIs. In this way, we have all the information
necessary for the shortest public transportation route between two given locations. We plan to figure out how
long it will take between stops with the help of Google Maps or estimated time intervals. This section will be
finalized after necessary discussions will be held in the 4th and 5th weeks. Once we get the API key, we will
use cutting-edge technologies such as Retrofit or Volley in Android Studio to make HTTP queries. Our
primary focus will be on developing a durable network client capable of managing flawless communication
with the API, as well as implementing the essential endpoints for data retrieval or transmission. Parsing API
responses, error handling, and dynamic UI updates will all be effortlessly integrated into our work. We will
prioritize the utilization of background threads or asynchronous processes to ensure a pleasant user
Koç University COMP 491 Computer Engineering Design

experience without disrupting the main UI thread.

In our app development, we will easily integrate the ability to access the user's current location. The first step
is to add necessary permissions to our [Link] file, ensuring access to precise location data. To
improve the user experience, we will dynamically check and request permissions at runtime, prompting users
as needed. To handle location updates, we will construct a separate class that implements the
“LocationListener” interface, guaranteeing that our app is aware of changes in the user's location. The
“LocationManager” will be responsible for requesting and maintaining location updates, with the
GPS_PROVIDER providing accuracy. We will methodically handle lifecycle events that initiate and
terminate location updates, as well as address instances in which location services are disabled, urging users
to enable them for maximum operation.

In our KuMoov app, we intend to create a strong Evaluation and Feedback Mechanism to collect user
feedback after each completed travel. Our technique is creating a user-friendly interface that motivates users
to submit assessments and feedback. Using Android's UI components, we will create an intuitive form or
dialogue where users may give their comments on the adventure. We will employ a backend system to record
and analyze this feedback, allowing us to improve the entire user experience using important insights. The
app will dynamically activate the feedback mechanism following each journey, ensuring a rapid and
continuous feedback loop for iterative improvements. Our user-centric approach will promote simplicity and
accessibility, encouraging active user interaction and contributing to the continuous refining of our app.

We have prepared a use case for our application's fundamental functionality. We will add additional use cases
and UML diagrams. These use cases may change in the future as we work on system design.

2.3 Demonstration
The demonstration of our transportation application will have two main components: performance analysis
measures and final demonstration features. The performance metrics will largely focus on quantitative
assessments of the application's performance, whilst the final presentation parts will stress qualitative aspects
of user experience.

2.3.1 Performance Analysis Measures

Efficient Schedule Integration: The study evaluates the course schedule integration accuracy by comparing
entered schedules with actual class times and the app's responsiveness to changes in schedules and additional
activities, focusing on app updates and transportation options.

Dynamic Journey Planning: The app's travel time estimates are evaluated for accuracy and efficiency by
comparing them with actual travel times for various routes. The algorithm's effectiveness in determining
optimal public transportation routes is assessed by comparing suggested routes with commonly used ones.

Shuttle Options and Location Based Services: The study evaluates the success rate of presenting alternative
transportation options when a user's preferred vehicle is unavailable, based on frequency and relevance. It
Koç University COMP 491 Computer Engineering Design
