The NSTP requires students to complete the program over one academic year, typically split into NSTP 1 and NSTP 2 over two semesters. Each semester is credited with three units, entailing 54 to 90 hours of participation in program activities. This accumulates to a total of six units across the full program .
The NSTP Act of 2001, RA 9163, was enacted in response to public calls for reforms in the ROTC program. It addresses concerns by providing students with the option to choose from three NSTP components, thus not mandating ROTC, thereby diversifying the ways in which students can contribute to national service beyond military training .
