A C T O N E (?)
Roughly the first 25-27 pages of your first draft.
It is the part of the movie that sets up the question of what will happen in the movie
Most of the main characters are introduced in this act.
SE Q U E N C E A - T H E O P E N I N G (1-13)
This is first mini-movie. The idea is to establish character and tone.
OPEN WITH MYSTERY
The opening image, the first scene of your movie needs to draw the audience in. Avoid
opening with talking heads.
TOOTSIE - we establish Michael as a great but difficult actor.
GODFATHER: the undertaker in the dark is talking about America.
SHREK - a book of Fairy Tales is torn apart. Someone is reading it in an outhouse. We are informed that this is not going to be like any fairy
tale we have ever seen.
AMERICAN BEAUTY - the video tape plays. Do you want me to kill your Dad?
JERRY MAGUIRE - this is the world. We're curious of who the narrator is?
