Instructions: Last date for submission is March 28, 2025

Objective:
This assignment aims to familiarize students with research paper writing and formatting in LaTeX
by reproducing a published research paper from a top-tier Computer Science journal in their area of
interest. The assignment will help students understand research paper structure, formatting
mathematical equations, tables, figures, citations, and references in LaTeX.

Assignment Task:
Each student must select a published research paper from a reputed Computer Science journal (e.g.,
IEEE Transactions, ACM Computing Surveys, Springer, Elsevier, Nature, etc.), relevant to their
research interest, and reproduce a draft version of the paper using LaTeX. The draft should closely
follow the original paper’s structure while ensuring proper formatting and presentation.

Paper Structure (Headings to Follow in LaTeX):

1. Title and Author Information (Use placeholders instead of actual author names)
2. Abstract (Summarize the original paper)
3. Introduction
o Overview of the problem
o Research motivation and objectives
o Contributions of the paper
4. Mathematical Formulations (Reproduce key equations using LaTeX)
5. Figures and Tables (Use LaTeX to format graphs, images, and tables)
6. Methodology (Summarize the approach followed in the original paper)
7. Results and Discussion (Reproduce key results in tabular or graphical format)
8. Conclusion
9. Citations and References (Use BibTeX to manage references, following IEEE/ACM/APA
format)

Submission Guidelines:
• Format: LaTeX (Submit the .tex file and compiled PDF)
• Page Limit: as per the chosen paper
• Tools: Overleaf, TeXStudio, or any LaTeX editor of choice
• Deadline: March 28, 2025
• Submission Mode: LMS

Evaluation Criteria:
• LaTeX Formatting & Structure (20%) – Proper use of sections, fonts, and templates.
• Mathematical Equations (20%) – Correct rendering of formulas and notations.
• Figures and Tables (20%) – Accurate placement and formatting using LaTeX.
• Citations & Referencing (20%) – Proper use of BibTeX for references.
• Overall Presentation (20%) – Clarity, professionalism, and adherence to research paper
standards

Students must use BibTeX to manage citations and references, adhering to formats like IEEE/ACM/APA. By doing this, they show proficiency in organizing and formatting bibliographic information, an essential skill for maintaining academic integrity and facilitating readers' access to sourced material.

The key educational objectives of the assignment include familiarizing students with the structure and format of research papers, enhancing their skills in using LaTeX for document preparation, and ensuring they can accurately reproduce elements like mathematical equations, tables, figures, citations, and references as found in professional publications. Students are also expected to gain insights into the research process by closely examining a published paper in their area of interest.

The expectation for the methodology section is that students should summarize the approach followed in the original paper without introducing new or different techniques. This involves understanding and clearly communicating the methods used in the published study, which is critical for accurately reflecting the research's context and validity.

Students might face challenges related to the accurate placement and formatting of figures and tables, such as adjusting dimensions, ensuring clarity, and maintaining consistent styles. To overcome these challenges, students should familiarize themselves with LaTeX packages like 'graphicx' for images and 'tabular' or 'table' environments for data presentation, ensuring they follow examples and best practices.

The emphasis on LaTeX formatting contributes to a student's success in scientific writing by instilling best practices in document preparation and presentation. LaTeX provides tools for precise control over the layout, fonts, and figures, which are essential for creating professional-grade documents that meet the high standards expected in academic publishing.

Using placeholders instead of actual author names in the 'Title and Author Information' section focuses students on mastering the structure and format without getting distracted by author-specific details. This approach emphasizes learning the craft of document preparation and the formal requirements of academic writing.

The assignment encourages critical engagement by requiring students to select a paper relevant to their research interests, reproduce its structure and content, and format it in LaTeX. This process necessitates a deep understanding of the paper’s methodology, results, and conclusions, prompting students to critically analyze the effectiveness and presentation of the original study.

The assignment specifies that students should reproduce key mathematical equations using LaTeX, highlighting the importance of precision and clarity in scientific communication. This requirement ensures that students learn to use LaTeX’s robust tools for typesetting complex equations correctly, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity and readability of academic documents.

The criteria include clarity, professionalism, and adherence to research paper standards. These are important because they ensure that the reproduced document reflects academic rigor and presentation quality, which are critical for effective scientific communication and reader comprehension.

Submission via LMS is important as it provides a centralized platform for managing student submissions, facilitating timely collection and tracking of assignments. It also streamlines the evaluation process, allowing educators to efficiently review, assess, and provide feedback while maintaining records for academic purposes.
