Exercises/Activities that aid in the enhancement of the macro-skills.
Specific Macro-skill: WRITING
Macro-skill writing refers to the overall ability to compose written communication effectively,
incorporating various sub-skills such as organization, coherence, clarity, and language
proficiency. It encompasses the capacity to convey ideas, arguments, or information in a
structured and coherent manner, tailored to the intended audience and purpose.
The group had gathered varied examples of activities regarding on the Writing skills enhancement and
these were as follows;
1.) Write yourself
The more children see the people around them writing, the more inclined they will be to write
themselves.
Example:
Title: “Letter for my future self”
Instructions:
1. Set aside uninterrupted time in a quiet, comfortable space.
2. Begin by addressing your future self. You can choose a specific time frame, like one year from
now or five years from now.
3. Reflect on your current hopes, dreams, and goals. Write about where you envision yourself in the
future and what steps you’re taking to get there.
4. Be honest about your current challenges and obstacles. Write about how you’re overcoming them
or seeking support.
5. Express gratitude for the lessons you’ve learned and the progress you’ve made.
6. Seal the letter in an envelope and mark it with the date you intend to open it.
7. Put the letter in a safe place where you’ll easily find it when the time comes.
8. When the designated time arrives, open the letter and reflect on how much you’ve grown and
changed since you wrote it.
This activity allows you to document your journey, gain perspective on your growth, provide
encouragement for your future self, and improve writing skills.
2.) Reading widely
Reading widely involves immersing yourself in a diverse array of literary works across various
genres, styles, and cultures. It’s about exploring classic novels alongside contemporary
bestsellers, going into genres spanning from fiction to poetry, and embracing the richness of
global literature. By exploring beyond familiar territory and seeking out critically acclaimed
works, you gain insights into different storytelling techniques, thematic depth, and cultural
perspectives. Additionally, engaging with reader recommendations and online communities
broadens your literary horizons, introducing you to new voices and hidden gems. Through this
exploration, you will enrich your own writing with influences and insights from the vast expanse
of human expression.
3.) Six Sentenced Story
Write a complete narrative in just six sentence, forcing creativity and concise language.
Brief explanation:
The first sentence typically introduces the setting or the main character, setting the stage for the narrative.
The following sentences develop the plot, introduce conflict or tension, and build towards a climax. The
final sentence provides resolution or concludes the story in a satisfying way, leaving an impact on the
reader. Despite its short length, a well-crafted six-sentence story can evoke emotions, spark imagination,
and leave a lasting impression.
4.) Genre Swap Experiment Writing
Take an existing piece of writing and rewrite it in a different genre, adapting tone, style, and
elements accordingly.
Example:
Title: “Unexpected Encounter”
Fantasy Genre:
In the enchanted forest of Eldoria, where magic danced amidst the whispering trees, a lone wanderer
stumbled upon a hidden glade shimmering with ethereal light. As she cautiously approached, a mystical
creature emerged from the shadows, its wings gleaming like polished sapphire. With a voice like wind
chimes, it revealed a prophecy that would change the course of her destiny forever.
Horror Genre:
The abandoned mansion loomed over the fog-shrouded moors like a sinister specter of the past, its
windows shattered and ivy creeping ominously up the decaying walls. Inside, a group of thrill-seekers
dared to explore its haunted halls, unaware of the malevolent presence lurking in the shadows. As the
night descended and their flashlights flickered ominously, they soon realized they were not alone.
The Genre Swap Experiment serves as a valuable exercise in honing writing skills, sparking creativity,
and deepening understanding of storytelling techniques across different genres.
5.) Feature Writing
Feature writing is a form of journalism that goes beyond the basic reporting of news events to
explore broader themes, human interest stories, or in-depth analyses of issues. Unlike news
articles, which focus on delivering facts in a concise and objective manner, feature articles are
often more narrative-driven and can take various forms, including profiles, interviews, personal
essays, and investigative reports.
By practicing feature writing, writers can strengthen their storytelling abilities, develop their
descriptive prowess, sharpen their research and analytical skills, broaden their knowledge base,
and cultivate a deeper understanding of audience dynamics. Ultimately, feature writing empowers
writers to produce compelling, well-informed, and engaging content that resonates with readers
across a wide range of subjects and genres.
